I always hear people saying IPS screen is great.. I never saw an IPS screen before.. but how does it compare to a current external LCD in terms of viewing angles, color reproduction, etc? on some models, adding IPS is $200 in addition, which a little more.. can get some one a 17" or 19" external LCD for home use.

An IPS screen is pretty much a CRT that's half an inch thick
It has absolute viewing angles unlike traditional LCDs which fade away at 40 degrees vertically and horizontally. As for comparing, whether its worth it or not is up to you. The external LCD is, well, external. The notebook LCD will be stuck on the LCD and will always be.

With external LCD screens, you have to check what kind of panels the manufacturer uses. There are many types of LCD panels, TN, MVA, PVA and IPS. Used to be the smaller external monitors used TN panels, and the larger ones 22" and above used IPS panels.
But nowadays there are all kinds of variations.
Apple Cinema display uses IPS panels. But they are quite expensive. -

I was looking at the 20" Apple Cinema Display, whopping $600. Man, those things are not cheap.
I've also read that there are some Dell LCD's that use S-IPS panels, but since Dell sources its LCD panels from different suppliers, it's a luck of the draw what kind of panel you'll eventually end up with.
