I purchased my Lenovo laptop in June 2010 and noticed problems with it immediately.

In Editplus (when I’m looking at my computer programs) and I page down very often lines or parts of lines disappear or look like gibberish. Then when I page up the lines look correct.

Folders sometimes disappear and reappear in MyComputer
Tables sometimes disappear and reappear in Microsoft Access

In Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks, the image files are displayed in date last modified rather than in alphabetical order.

Under MyComputer when I click on an image it takes me to a Windows Picture and Fax Viewer rather than directly to Fireworks.

I have an old IBM Thinkpad which has none of these problems.

I did call IBM and they indicated they could only help if there was a hardware problem. They told me to check hardware diagnostics. If there are no problems, they said the operating system (Windows XP Professional) might be corrupt and said I may need to reinstall it.

First of all, how do you check hardware diagnostics? Secondly, any recommendations? Should I reinstall the operating system after backing up the hard drive or is there a fix for these problems?

    Thanks,

    Robin

The hardware diagnostic is called System Toolbox. It can run a number of hardware diagnostics and tell you if something is not functioning properly. It sounds more software related than hardware if you ask me, but that's a guess on my part.

As to stuff disappearing, then reappearing, I don't have a clue. You can click on the file name column in Windows Explorer to re-order them alphabetically. You can set the default program to a file by right clicking on it and hit "Open With", then "Choose Program". A dialog box pops. You can then choose Photoshop or Fireworks, and there's a checkbox to make it the default.

As ZaZ stated, run the diagnostics first.

A failing hard drive can result in files disappearing as it can't properly write them. I've seen it plenty of times. Also another possibility of disappearing files is the result of using the machine in audit mode (rare).

    Zaz,

    Where is the System Toolbox?

I entered System Toolbox in Help and it didn't come up with anything.

It's probably in the ThinkVantage folder on the start menu. Perhaps Lenovo moved it into it's own folder. I don't use it myself. If you can't find it, you can download it here.
