After a lot of research I narrowed it down to Lenovo, and specifically the T400 and T400s. However I've seen repeated posts about how bad the T400/T400s screen is and I cant find anywhere photos of how the screen looks like.

Below I posted some photos of my T60p with a pitch black background and some with NR.com open(sorry for the low quality). Can anyone post pics of their T400/T400s or any other Thinkpad to clear how BAD is BAD?

p.s. I'm a student and my budget is around $1000 but I've already stretched it from $700-800. Considering this I don't want to spend $1100 on T400s and get something that will disappoint me.

I currently own a T60p (IPS panel) and I'm more than a happy owner. The only thing I don't like about it is the weight, it's almost 6lb and I hate carrying it with me everyday.

Check out the T400s review here:

There are some shot of the screens in that review.

If you're used to an IPS screen, I can guarantee that you'll need at least a week to get used to TN screens again. I used IPS screen exclusively now, and whenever I look at the screen of my friend's T400 laptop my eyes become very tired. Your mileage may vary, of course.

You're going from probably the best notebook screen ever made to something else. It's going to be a downgrade. I guess the usage would be important. I found my 14" R60 perfectly acceptable for Office and Internet type stuff, but movie watching or the like wasn't as good.

If you want something similar, but smaller, you could look at the X60t. It's a couple pounds lighter, but lacks the optical drive. The AFFS screen swap with the X200 or X200s is another option that's within your budget, but will likely have consequences for your warranty.

From what I've been hearing, the Thinkpad IPS screens were one of the best in terms of color reproduction and viewing angle, so you'll probably be dissatisfied with the TN panel offerings on most current laptops.

My primary recommendation for you would be a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 Tablet, but that's usually way out of your budget. There is, however, one NBR forumer selling his X200t for $1050 shipped, so that may be worth considering especially if you value high quality screens. I believe the X200t has a very nice (and bright, unlike the old IPS screens) S-PVA screen.
