I was just wondering if there were any rumors about a thinkpad netbook. I know lenovo has a netbook but its not a thinkpad and I would like a thinkpad quality netbook.

    Thanks!

I was in Beijing a couple weeks ago & saw one at the Hailong mall for something like 5k RMB, but it could have been fake.

There are very strong rumors about a spectacular design for a ThinkPad NetBook. We have been digging around for sometime looking for pictures. We think it will be amazing and we will post our thoughts on the blog very soon.

The ThinkPad NetBook will be the NetBook to end all NetBook's

Aside from people asking about it here I have not seen any credible rumors...

There will be no such thing as a Thinkpad netbook.

Think about what Thinkpad stands for and consider what a netpad stands for. They are quite the opposite. There is no way that a thinkpad can be a netbook.

The closest you may see is a 10.1" ThinkPad with a ULV Intel CPU, and a weight between 2 and 2.5 pounds.

This would be a return to the size of old ThinkPads (e.g. S30), but would not be at a netbook price (I would expect $800+).

I think the S10 is there, if they would just add the trackpoint. PLEASE make a trackpoint keyboard for my S10!

i dunno why people are complaining about not having a "thinkpad" netbook. just get an x60s or something and it'll perform just as good as any netbook with the trackpoint for around the same price and weight.

What do you mean can't afford to not have a business netbook. The price point for business is not what the netbook is. The netbook attracts consumers. Business care about total cost of ownership. So if the thinkpad netbook would likely be much more expensive if it was something more than a name for branding. If lenovo was to truly offer a real thinkpad netbook it would likely only be in the business market, which seems at odds with the whole craze in the first place. I think the only businesses that are really considering a netbook are the ones who are just into IT consumerization trends (for instance like some business professionals wanting iphones...).

I could still see lenovo introducing an even smaller ultraportable, but I wouldn't call it a netbook based on what the name means right now.

I don't see either of those designs as particularly likely.

The Butterfly keyboard was built for the very high end ThinkPad 700 series with a goal of producing a full width keyboard on a 10" 4x3 aspect ratio notebook. However, it substantially increased cost and depth (the keyboard had to stack on top of itself) so was largely abandoned. Even later models like the s30 managed a very good keyboard despite using a 10" display. Further, the need for a butterfly board is far lower with the current crop of widescreen displays. Therefore, I find a butterfly board highly unlikely at any display size.

I also don't see what value this could possibly provide to the ThinkPad line if it is offered with a 11" or 12" display. At 9" or 10" it would be substantially smaller than the x200/x300 and thus provide a mobility solution, but at 11" or 12" it would simply cannibalize sales from the superior models.

Additionally, T100/x100 would be the wrong designation unless it has an 11" screen based on Lenovo's current numbering structure.

Some good, more technical points about design Jon. I think most of here don't see how lenovo would fit this into the thinkpad line unless it was largely just forced into it with little synergy among other thinkpad offerings (or without a real market for use).

Probably the only way a ThinkPad would release a "netbook" would be if everyone abandoned the idea that Netbook = cheap. More like "ultraportable" according to many people.

It'll be easier arguing in terms of specs than it is arguing semantics - especially since the distinction between "Netbook" and "Notebook" seem to blur more every day.
