Hi all,
I read somewhere on this forum that if someone makes after market upgrades to their Thinkpad, they can still submit it for warranty under TPP. Is this true? For example, I upgraded the ram in my T420s from 2gb to 8gb and will be adding an 80gb mSATA drive.
If something were to go wrong with the computer and I need to submit it for TPP, would it be ok to have the 8gb and mSATA drive included?
Thanks,

I believe in the past users were advised to remove all of their own parts when they submit the machines for repair. The technicians have their own components to test with. The RAM and HDD/SSD are both CRU (Customer replaceable units) so changing/swapping/whatevering them is perfectly ok under warranty (in terms of the machine as a whole, however swapping in 8gb of ram and them having the 8gb fail, lenovo will not honor that part under warranty, as the warranty is only offered for parts that shipped with the initial system).

It will not void your warranty, but most of the time it is good advice to remove the hard drive and any aftermarket components when sending in a machine for repair. This is because it is possible for your original hard drive to get accidentally lost or erased or some other combination of things to happen to your data. As long as the problem is not with the hard drive itself, I would always recommend removing it prior to sending your thinkpad in for service.
