Anyone heard about the thinkpad R50E? Is it a good buy for basic office use and surfing? It's selling around for $1250... I think you can get for much cheaper with the same specs of another brand, but i maybe wrong.

I've heard of it, it's a very nice notebook at a bargain price. Like you said you could find another brand with the same specs for less. However the build quality and reliability of the thinkpads are tops and they are built like a tank...very strudy, no plastic hinges here.
Also IBM's support is the best, you won't be waiting on hold and the support person (if your in the USA)will be in america and have a good grasp of the english language(they are the only notebook/pc company whose tech support has not been moved to the far east.)and if it ever needs repair they will over night a shipping box for you and they will also pay fedex overnight shipping both ways, so a repair is usually only means being without for 5-6 days. To me the little extra is well worth it.
