I just received a new IBM thinkpad R51 from a wholsaler via UPS. When I tried to start it I heard the following beep error: One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep. Per the IBM web Site the FRU or action, in sequence is

    1: DIMM
    2: System Board

I think this came about because I requested the wholesaler upgrade my RAM before sending it and they may have installed in incorrectly. Has anyone else ran into this error, and if so does my diagnosis sound right, or could it be something else. EVen though the machine in under warranty I'd rather not have to deal with sending it in, so if there's an easy fix I can do, or have done that anybody knows about that would be great. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

sheesh, they might have tested it before sending a notebook that doesn't work to you. If it's under warranty I'd get IBM tech support on the phone to clarify if what you say is true...I'm guessing you're right. Why not open up the RAM compartment and take a quick look to see if something is loose, make sure it is slotted in correctly.

Yeah I took out the card and it works fine, and when I called IBM they said the RAM card was a compatible type. So it means that either the card is bad, or the system board is, which would be a bigger hassle than I want to deal with. I agree though, you'd think they'd at least turn it on before sending it to me.
