I have an R51 running Windows XP Professional. My max resolution is 1024x768, which is pretty weak. I know this is a silly question and probably not possible, but is there any way less than physically changing the display itself to get the resolution higher?

Not a silly question, but no, you can't do anything about it short of getting a new display.
