    Hi All,

I just purchased a R60i from work and it has a T5470 C2Duo. I'd like to upgrade to something like a T8100. The Intel chipset appears to be a 965 and the processor socket reads as a PGA 479M. I'm also seeing an extension at the end of the ebay listing such as SLAYP, SLAUU and SLAVJ. Does it have to be a specific one?

Also I when I was reading the service manual it said that some models have a Heat Sink plate. Am I going to need this or is it for dedicated video?

Finally are there varients to the heatsink/fan combo or will the one I currently have work? My concern is that there are wires running on top of the CPU and want to be sure I have adequate cooling.

    Would something like these work?

    It says 479-ball micro

    Thanks for the help
    Nick

not all R61/T61/T61p motherboard supports the T8xxx and T9xxx CPU natively, in these cases you would need to get the middleton modified bios.

The heatsink you got should handle it with no problem. Don't worry the T8100 doesn't get that hot, it has about the same heat output as the CPU you got.

I'd look for a SSD before upgrading the CPU. It's much more likely to improve performance noticeably.

Thanks everyone for the information. Is there any way I can tell from the 965 chipset if the T8100 will work? CPU-Z lists the board as model 7733CTO and GM965 as rev CO. I have a new SSD drive that I am also going to add.

If not I'll chance it and get the modified BIOS update. The one thing that I'm worried about is I have a R61i which lists the TYPE as 7733-CTO but there is nothing on Lenovo's site with a R60i with this type, just a R60.

Yes PM965 supports all 800 FSB Core 2 Duo chips, including Penryn chips that are 800 FSB (T8x00, T9x00, and X9000, though I don't recommend X9000 in R61i).

while the intel chipset does support the T8xxx and T9xxx, there is an issue of digital thermometer and analogue thermometer used in the two generations of thinkpad motherboard.

So does this mean it might not work? Can you take a look and let me know if the two CPUs I posted from ebay will work? I mean I understand there is always a chance it may not work but I'd like to be certain as much as possible.

as said just flash the bios with middleton's modified bios and you should be good to go.

Ok now I am more confused. The MB has socket 479M on it. CPU-z is saying Socket P (478). Are they all the same? Should I get the Socket P or Socket 479? Sorry for the noob questions but everything is showing conflicting socket results.

R61i is Socket P. Just look for any Socket P CPU.

Actually avoid T6xxx and anything with a 1066MHz FSB.
