I bought the Thinkpad SL400 recently and am thoroughly dissappointed with the performance.....

    - The fan seems to be louder than the last T43 I had and it produces a low albeit audible hmm even when idle...is this common???? Should I expect this out of every thinkpad?

    - The laptop HEATS up when I play games...I tried playing Civilization 4 - I got the 256mb Video card (which does not require that many graphics) and the lower left part of the laptop was ridiculously hot

Is this due to a BIOS update issue or is it just that the fan is not working??

I am thinking of returning the laptop but thought I'd get some input from here before.

    Any advice would be appreciated

the only reason I went for the SL series (over the R) was it had an HDMI output and a Blu Ray drive

It doesn't matter really what game you are playing as pretty much all games will produce more heat then normal. Granted playing a heavy duty game will work the card harder, its the use of the graphics card for 3d rendering that really bumps the heat level. Heck my vostro heats up from playing old games like Starcraft and diablo 2. The thing is the card normally runs lower 2d clocks during normal operation and in some cards more then triples its clocks when in 3d mode (e.g. gaming) hence the heat. As for the fan noise that's all dependent on the heat, use and location of the laptop. If the room is warm or you have it on your lap or its not well ventilated then the fan may run more or faster then normal.

    Thanks a lot....
it seems there was a virus on my computer

While running the same game on max graphics
I get CPU temperaturs of 45-55 and GPU of 75 instead of the original 75 and 98 respectively

The range of temperatures I get now seem to be more in line with normal

    Thanks a lot
