I keep getting mixed answers about what the max amount of memory is allowed in the thinkpad Sl500, some people say 4GB and some say 3GB (who sells laptops these days with only 3GB max?). Does anyone know how much it is?
For instance
Thinkpadtoday.com says 4GB http://www.thinkpadtoday.com/thinkpad-sl500-review-a-detailed-look-2.htm
Cnet.com says 3GB http://cbsnews.com.com/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-sl500/4507-3121_7-33178371.html?tag=sub

It can use up to 4 gigs but only if the operating system you use is 64bit. If it's a 32bit OS, it'll only be able to use 3gb even if you've installed 4.

Also I was reading up on the Intel Montevina which is used for the SL500 and it said that it can support DDR3 memory but lenovo gives you DDR2.***WARNING NOOB QUESTION*** what is the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 memory and are there any advantages? -

Since the 4 GB PC5300 SODIMM stick is available on the market, maybe it can go up to 8 GB (4 + 4) just like the T61p can. Someone will have to try it to find out.
DDR3 has a faster bus speed than DDR2.
DDR2: 533/667/800 MHz
DDR3: 1066/1333 MHz -

And I'm sure there are more SA platform laptops can do the same, I think it depends on your BIOS. -
So I'm a bit confused. Which one to choose? There is no difference in pricing as far as I have seen...but there are very few shops that offer it explicitly marked as "DDR3". Not even the Lenovo US shop gives you the option of configuring a SL500 with DDR3.
