It can use up to 4 gigs but only if the operating system you use is 64bit. If it's a 32bit OS, it'll only be able to use 3gb even if you've installed 4.

I know about the Vista 32-bit max memory shortage but I have never seen a review that says the laptop is limited based on Vista.

Also I was reading up on the Intel Montevina which is used for the SL500 and it said that it can support DDR3 memory but lenovo gives you DDR2.***WARNING NOOB QUESTION*** what is the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 memory and are there any advantages?

In theory DDR3 is faster and more energy efficient than DDR2. In reality the difference will not be noticeable. Also it depends on the manufacturer whether they make their laptops DDR3 capable or not so some are and some aren't. The SL500 isn't capable of using DDR3 memory.

Since the 4 GB PC5300 SODIMM stick is available on the market, maybe it can go up to 8 GB (4 + 4) just like the T61p can. Someone will have to try it to find out. :D

DDR3 has a faster bus speed than DDR2.

    DDR2: 533/667/800 MHz

    DDR3: 1066/1333 MHz

WAIT WHAT?!?!?!?!? The t61p can go up to 8? OMG!!! Didn't know that! The sticks are as expensive as the computer itself though.

Well, I just got a PDF containing some "Lenovo ThinkPad SL500– model 2746-4CG" description. It says
The PDF itself dates back to July 30th. Looks like a real Lenovo one I think. It has an english description and refers to the German Website, as well as to Vodafone Germany because of the 30day UMTS/WWAN voucher that is included.

So I'm a bit confused. Which one to choose? There is no difference in pricing as far as I have seen...but there are very few shops that offer it explicitly marked as "DDR3". Not even the Lenovo US shop gives you the option of configuring a SL500 with DDR3.
