My school lists a student discount IBM site (used it to buy my current z60m because it was less than EPP). PM me and I will link you to the site. It is not like the EPP that needs a ID and password, this is just a simple link :)

I had it explained to me as an "alumni" program. Basically if you graduated highschool you qualified. I bought my z60m through it, and to this day I was never asked to show proof, nor had any place to select my exact school besides somewhere in WI.

    I priced a 200796U by state, retail is $3,489.
    Code:
    AZ/GA/HI/IA/ID/KS/LA/MN/MO/MT/NE/NV/OR/PA/SC/SD/UT/VT/WA/WI$2,686.53
    VA $2,930.76
    AL/IN/MA/OH/RI/TN $3,035.43
    CO/CT/DC/DE/IL/KY/MD/ME/MI/MS/ND/NH/NJ/NM/TX/WV/WY $3,140.10
    FL/NY $3,314.55
Whether or not all products are teired similarly I didn't test / don't know, just FYI they're not all discounted equally. I got these prices by adding product code 200796U directly to my cart from each state's page, where available.

Just configured the z60t I'm looking at on PA's website. Only ended up about $30 cheaper than it was on NJ's website, so no, the discount isn't consistent.

Can anyone tell me, whats the difference between these drive options? It looks to me like the cheapest one (the one that says "Subtract $42.50") is a DVD burner, which is what I'm looking for, I'm just confused as to why its cheaper than what looks to be a DVD reader only.

-ThinkPad 24x/24x/24x/8x Max Combo Ultrabay Slim Drive
-ThinkPad 2x Max DVD Recordable Ultrabay Slim Drive [add $85.00]
-ThinkPad 8x Max DVD Recordable Dual Layer Ultrabay Slim Drive [subtract $42.50]
-ThinkPad 8x Max DVD-ROM Ultrabay Slim Drive [subtract $17.00]

When I ordered from the student site, they required a valid school email. My school email was acting funny and was rejecting their email so they actually called me and left a message saying that my email wasn't working and my order would be cancelled by the end of the day if I didn't provide a valid one.

Thats funny, I asked the sales rep I talked to if I need to show any proof of enrolment and they told me they do not care since it applies to alumni.

You might try calling IBM. I did this a couple years ago before they had any mention of a student discount on their website. I ended up talking to a knowledgable rep at IBM who seemed to deal with educators and the price quotes he were giving me were at least $200-300 cheaper than the current prices on the website. He didn't mention anything about having to send in any proof of being a student. He simply asked me where I went to college and said that "IBM likes to help college students."

For college and graduate school IBM offers between 35-42% discount off the published web prices. It varies from school to school. I had negotiated on behalf of my school a few years ago and we got 41% off. they curtailed it a bit because they found students reselling on ebay.

why would the cost of identical units vary by over $600 between states?
