I noticed that there was a modem jack on the side of my T400, but when I try to install the driver available for Windows 7 (which I am using), I get the following error message:
"Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MODEM device for this driver."
The driver I tried to install is this one:
Lenovo Support & downloads - Modem Software Adapter for Windows 7 - ThinkPad
Why can't it find the modem? Under device manager, I tried updating the drivers for all the devices listed under "Other devices". I told Windows to search in the folder containing the driver I just downloaded, but each time, Windows was unable to find a matching driver.
I checked in the BIOS to see if I might have disabled the modem by accident, but I couldn't find any setting corresponding to a 56k modem.
I checked Windows Update, but I could find no optional or important updates for a modem.
What have I missed?

modem also need the sound driver, have you installed that?

thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Might not even have a modem/Ethernet combo card, my T21 did have the RJ11 and RJ45 jacks but no Ethernet, I wondered why it never connected to Ethernet.

You can't order the T400 without the modem card, unless the card is detached or broken, then you should have the feature.

I can confirm my T400 has a modem an its drivers are here... I haven't used dialup in years so I don't really have any use for it, though. It's listed as "ThinkPad Modem Adapter" by Conexant Systems, date of 1 July 2009, and a version of 7.80.5.0. That might get you a way to download the drivers from elsewhere and see if they'll install right. I am running Win7 Pro x64.
