Ok i just received my t400, 2.8ghz core 2 duo, 4gb DDR3 on 64bit vista, 7400rpm HD and intel turbo memory.

So far I have had it for a week and its been useless....

When i open 2 browsers in IE8 with 2 tabs each , if I open up another one it hangs....

In a lecture today I turned it back on from sleep to take quick notes when i opened up Microsoft word and opened up wireless connection at the same time it completely froze..... and by the time it became functional it was too late. This was embarrassing because I was telling my friend beside me how I just got a new 1.5 grand laptop and he completly started to laugh when he was able to take the notes with a netbook he got free from an ISP.

My 4 year old HP desktop with a 2gb ram and 2.0 inte VIiv seems WAY WAY faster than the t400.

I called lenovo they said that I should do a hardware check I did that everyone came back flawless.

Perhaps its due to the bloatware? I have 116 processos in task manager mostly from microsoft and lenovo.

Also the laptop is warm unlike what others say.

When i put it in my backpack while its still at sleep i can feel the heat.

Maybe try a clean install of your OS...

I did not do a clean install, but I did uninstall many things on my T500. With my system monitoring processes, I have about 70 processes in Vista Business 64-bit.

I don't run Vista, but I have 38 processes in windows XP.

118 is too much. I'm not sure how many Vista runs by default, but I don't think it's 118.

Get rid of whatever anti-virus program that came with your system, install Avira.

Right click the programs in the lower right corner and make sure none "run on startup" except your antivirus.

Then you're going to want to get into msconfig in vista, hide the microsoft services, and disable the rest (with the exception of your antivirus and the ones you NEED.

Then post again with the results.

    --------------------------------

The simplest way is a clean install of the Operating System. Rather than trying to get rid of excessive bloatware.

The majority of T400 do not get warm. Maybe it's your 2.8Ghz Processor & 7200RPM Hard Drive congesting the cooling system.

    -----------------------------------

Revo Uninstall (free software) is also a good way of completely getting rid of a program.

    ie. Norton AntiVirus :)

Ok the problem is should I remove the lenovo programs, and I also did a format which I thaught is going to remove most of the programs but it still had all the bloatware. I dont have time to do another uninstall because I have already trasferred all my programs and files on here.

So should i rmeove all lenovo programs from startup and I have no idea what else to remove, they all seem a part of the system like bluetooth etc..

I am running kaspersky which I run on all my pcs and they all seem to work fine with it.

And about the heat can I limit the CPU because the heat is really anoying when i am using the mousepad i can feel it.

install revo uninstall, click to run and use the built in snipping tool in vista to take a screen shot.

Do the same for msconfig with hidden microsoft services.

    Post in this thread.

    Got to love the bloatware...

Microsoft should put WAY more pressure on OEMs to not f*ck up their OS—I really don’t get it sometimes.

    Even when I’m HEAVILY multitasking, I don’t have 116 process…

Dd you update all of your drivers, your bios, and install the latest service pack for Vista?

Does the system recognize all of the memory?

I don't see any real "bloatware".

If you have the backup cd's I would suggest getting rid of all the "thinkpad supplement this, productivity that."

If this fails then consider Windows 7 or XP Pro SP3...

Isnt windows 7 at beta right now?

If he has 116 processes, then he must have a substantial amount of bloatware... a default Vista installation, depending on drivers, runs between 50 and 60.

@OP: When you do reinstall the OS, try getting a copy of Windows 7 for free through your college/university. The program is called MSDN-AA.

If you uninstall some of the Lenovo Software be sure to atleast keep Power manager, Active Protection and System Update. Everything else is optional. Power manager is vital because it is able squeeze more battery life out of your system because it is tailored to your laptop (unlike windows which has to be more general). Active Protection is important period and is light weight. System update is good to have to snatch new drivers and software updates that are specific to your Thinkpad.

After that play around with programs and choose which you want to have.

I looked at the screenshots provided and there were a lot of useless programs or services running for no reason (MSN, Skype/associated programs, Windows Live Toolbar, Bluetooth services, Java, ThinkVantage services, ThinkPad UltraZoom, Adobe Flash Helper, etc.). When you say you reinstalled Windows and still have 116 processes, I'm assuming you reinstalled using the recovery DVD; this is not what we've been referring to.

At this point you can solve the problem either by running a utility called msconfig (Start > type "msconfig") and manually disabling any unnecessary programs from starting automatically, or you can do a clean install (a pristine copy of Windows plus drivers - that's it.)

I'm not 100% certain if this will help.
A Buddy that I game with posted this and was all excited about it.

MS has just released a neat little utility made by sysinternal called Process Monitor which I think may help people trouble shoot Wndows. It allows you to check what's really happening on your system as it's happening.
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx

Here is one of the cool things it can do; go to Options and select Boot Logging, then reboot your machine. After the reboot, launch the monitoring tool and then analyze the log. If you right click on a column header, you can select which columns you want to see. Select everything under Application Detail. You now have the exact path to every file that is accessed during boot-up! This is a great way to look for spyware and other crap!

I am curious about the web pages you are referring to--usually when I experience a slow computer, it occurs when I open a web page that is a data-bound report with very heavy calculations.

Ya that is the thing, I expect slow down with pages that are data bounded. But opening an empty tab has a small lag...

Okay, I would seriously consider reviewing a "vista tweak guide" to really disable some of those 100+ processes. For example, when I am web surfing with AVG antivirus running I have 57 processes in task manager.

I would highly recommend you consider looking into the visual aspects of Vista and tuning them down (Aero, and window animations). Also, I would change web browsers if it is possible. I have never been a fan of IE.

Start-up programs are always a good place to start, but don't use msconfig to change them. Try services.msc instead. Here is a great website for tweaking Vista.

Be careful what you are doing and take the time to do it right the first time and you shouldn't have to keep fussing with it.

As others have indicated, that is an obscene number of processes. Your choice is pretty obvious to me. Reformat the drive, and reinstall the OS. Only add the apps/drivers you need to that installation. I know time is of the essence, but if you consider all the crap you'll go through trying not to format the disk and running the PC in its sluggish state, reinstalling the OS may save you time in the long run. Alternatively, I have a blazing fast T61p that I'd be willing to trade you! J/K unless you twist my arm.

If a clean install is something you'd like to try you should read the "Clean Install Guide" posted by forum member Stallen. It is for Vista, but it has some valuable info if you havn't done a clean install before.

I have t400 with p8400-2.26ghz. It runs super cool. I threw IntelBurnTest/max setting at it and temps were still decent. I was surprised at how cool it runs.

Thats the thing I thought I did a clean install and then I started to transfer all my data. Now I have 80gb worth of data on this that I do not want to delete. I will try tweaking some things and I will update you guys on that.

One more thing, I would look at Power Manager and determine what the CPU performance is set to for different power states. I would try changing these around to something you like. I have customized my settings, but it sounds like you should at least try the "Maximum Performance" setting, and see what kind of hit your battery life takes.

I suggest installing Win7 on there. I have the RTM running on my laptop with roughly 50 processes.
