Every now and then while I'm mobile, I open up my thinkpad to see the trackpad outline right at the center of the LCD screen. It's not an indentation but more like dirt marks.

Is this normal? Should I remove the remove the trackpad cap if it isn't? Do I need a keyboard cover?

Happens quite frequently, especially if you're putting more pressure on the lid of the Thinkpad. Best way to prevent this is to use a "lower" TrackPoint cover, such as the "eraserhead" one.

Will it ever damage my screen or is it fine?

It can cause minor damage to the surface which can be noticeable at certain angles but not when in use. One simple measure to reduce the problem is to place a sheet of paper over the keyboard before closing the computer.

Sometimes it can be an assembly error, it was with my T420. I removed the keyboard and saw that some wires were not where the supposed to be. I taped them up and put them in the right "canal" and that solved it in my case.
