i've experienced quite a few random shut downs with my system as of late. it doesnt go to a BSOD, it just goes from running fine to total shut down.
it's happened sporadically throughout the time i've owned my T410, but not enough in the past to make me worry. but today it shut off 3 times in a matter of about 10 minutes.
its not overheating or being used intensely. its absolutely random.
i called warranty service and they said it's probably a problem with the motherboard, but im wondering if anyone has experienced this?

    Have you checked the temperatures?

    Scanned your system for malware?

Ran hardware diagnostics to make sure all your hardware is in good order?

Yep. I regularly sit the laptop on a cooling pad and it really never seems hot.
I have Avast running full-system scans daily and have never had anything malicious reported.
I've also run diagnostics through the Thinkvantage Toolbox and everything passes.
A google search tells me I'm not the only one who has had this problem but it doesnt look like a solution was ever found.

It has to do with a voltage regulation component on the motherboard. Unfortunately the only way to fix it is to RMA it.

Interesting. How did you figure that out? and do you know of any ways to prevent the problem?

I'm quoting from a Lenovo representative on their forums. This quote is regarding the T400 but the representative acknowledges that they have received similar reports for the T410.

"This issue is hardware and it requires an updated system board. Not every system was affected, as it was a tolerance issue with a voltage regulation component."

There isn't a way to prevent the problem to my knowledge other than to have the motherboard replaced. I'm assuming the voltage fluctuations cause the computer to randomly shutdown judging by the explanation above.

I would send Mark a PM on the official forums.

    Thanks for the info.
I've already called warranty support and they agreed to fix/replace the computer, so I think i'm good (unless i should speak to Mark in addition).

If they agreed to service it you should be good to go. :)
