On the Canadian website, it's ONLY available for the basic model of T410s (type 2901).

Is there a general timeframe of when they are available on the US site post the tabook appearance?

Under "Supported Features," TRIM is grayed out, so I assume that's a no.

What exactly does TRIM do, anyway?

no, but i'd say we should see it available for sale in under a month now that it is in tabook, based on past history

Switchable graphics is available on the most expensive (the very left one out of three options) "Elite ThinkPad T410s laptop with integrated graphics".

    NVidia NVS Switchable Graphics 512MB, Intel Core i5-520M Processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB) [add $125.00]
Selecting this option may delay your shipment 3-4 weeks.

R u sure functional switchable graphics actually exists on the T410s? Or is it just a myth?

As I answered above you, it's all in the sticky.

No chance of having a non TN panel. Also, even if models list 500:1, it will never have that contrast.

Yep, switchable graphics is available as on option on the US site. It is the laptop model on the far right (the most expensive one with the least number of configurable options). Looks like the switchable graphics will delay order 3-4 weeks. Really glad I didn't wait for it, the T410s I ordered on Monday will be here in 3 days.

I'm not interested in buying any Nvidia cards anymore.

there is no delay listed when configuring with the WiMax option. Might be good to give them a call and see what the hold up is before cancelling, if you were to go that route.

most likely yes. you can get it a little cheaper if you buy the extra 2gb somewhere else, but might not be worth the hassle.

Nice, I guess it's a bit late for me. I always hear people getting discounts from their reps, how exactly do you go about that conversation or ask for a discount? Might come in handy in a couple of years for my next laptop... is your price pre-tax?

Well, I'm outside on the patio in bright sunlight typing up this message on my new T410s. So far, very happy with the new laptop. The screen is just as easy to read as the screen on my Dell Latitude E6400 in bright sunlight, if not easier.

I actually really like the screen. It has plenty of brightness, and also it gets plenty dim. This is one thing that bothers me abut many new laptops, the screens are still too bright even at the dimmest setting. I like to have the screen dimmed quite a bit if I'm working in a dark room and most laptops don't get dim enough for me and I feel like i'm fyring my eyeballs. Luckily, the T410s gets dim enough :)

Perhaps the contrast ratio would be an issue while watching DVDs or something like that where you need rich black colors. But, I usually hook up the laptop to an external monitor for watching movies anyways.

Very glad I decided to get the T410s and check the screen out for myself.

I got my t410s two weeks ago, 4GB, SSD, integrated graphics model. I like it overall but it has flaws. I am not worried about the screen at all. it is bright and sharp as far as I can tell.
Disappointed by the battery. I did not get the ultrabay battery and now I can barely do 3 hours of skype and internet without using extreme battery stretch options that dim the screen close to black.

And I am pretty annoyed by some whining noise that others have described as probably being CPU whining. I only hear it in a quiet room. but it is getting on my nerves. Maybe most of you have seen this thread but I was wondering if

anybody DOES NOT HEAR ANY WHINING?

Can I return a laptop based on this noise?

Its only audible in a quiet room when the fan is not running.

I might hear a little something if I put my ear on the machine - really high pitched I think? I can't hear those frequencies very well though so...not really bothering me (if its there). I like the computer though very usable and fast. The ultrbay battery is a must for unplug time. Amazingly it seems to more than double the time available to be unplugged. All of the talk about the monitor sucking had me worried but for my use it is not even close to a problem. I have the Samsung drive which apparently is worse than the Intel drive but since I have not compared the two individually I am more than happy with the speed. So much faster than anything I have used before (regular hard drives). Anyway, I have had it a few days now, good machine for me and hopefully will be worth the 8 weeks I waited. It looks they are arriving faster now.

Yeah, the battery life doesn't seem to be that good. I haven't done any official tests, but considering that it has integrated graphics and SSD, the battery life should be better.

Hey guys, I just bought a T410 with 64 bit windows 7 with only 2 gb memory. I thought it would be cheaper to just order another 2gb ram, but I saw there were different types of ram memory. They ranged from 50 bucks to 85 bucks, sod the different types of ram really matter? Do any of you guys recommend a certain type over another?

    Thanks

    >> This thing is a lot lighter than it seems in the pictures. I read a couple of review online and I wasn’t convinced that it was going to be so portable. It weighs nothing.

"It weighs nothing. " - Yes at just 1.8Kg, they do feel that they weigh nothing. I always wonder at the phenomenon that -- to me anyway -- 1.8Kg is as light as a feather, yet at just 1Kg more, at 2.8Kg, a laptop feels as if it weighs a ton...

You paid PREMIUM dollars for that machine. I would expect perfection and wouldn't be satisfied with less. Yes, I would have them fix it, replace it, or return it.

Just don't let matters go beyond the return period.

Man that is a loaded question...depends on what you are doing I guess. Surfing with WiFi I would guess about 6 hours. I feel like I could make it last a while longer but I could also start really doing stuff and kill it in around 3 hours.

Like any laptop I have had usage is the main factor in battery consumption.

6 hrs total for light normal usage is pretty amazing, honestly, considering how much you normally get with just the 6 cell.

I'd be very impressed if the Ultrabay battery doubled your battery life as it's only 3 cells more. That's good news for me, though. I could use 3 more hours.

I understand that the ESC and DEL keys are enlarged on the Thinkpad Keyboards because they are used frequently.

Anyone care to pipe in why these keys are used so often / for what? I rarely use these keys and want to know if there's shortcuts or functions I'm unaware of...

Well, Del is pretty useful whenever you type anything substantial - word processing, forum posts, web addresses, whatever. It deletes things (surprise!).

Esc has a variety of uses, cancelling out of menus, popups, what have you. Depending on the programs you use, it might also toggle modes (like, say in some text editors). It's also useful for ctrl-esc (Windows Menu), or Alt-Esc (send current-focused window to the back).

    Mchoppin and nikkisixx,
I am very unhappy for you and for myself to hear about the persisting CPU whining issues. Let me tell you what happened to me:
I got a new 400s (yes, the predecessor) and had the same problem: whining CPU noise, high pitched which was really getting to me - yes I am particular about sounds - but still. I called Lenovo, had them replace the speakers (as the noise was channeled through the speakers) but eventually had them take the computer back from me for a full refund. Basically I talked to one of the people in Georgia (tech. department) and a sales representative at the same time; the tech. person tried to pull a few bs tricks on me when I told him in a very specific way: this is related to CPU usage: if I set the performance of the computer on minimal, the high pitch noise abates..if it works on maximum performance, it's way louder. They took it back from me eventually and gave me money.
Now I've been waiting for a good deal (which expires tomorrow) to buy a new 410s hoping that this won't be an issue again. But you are saying that you have the whining noise? Could you please describe it for me?
    anyone else?
I cannot go through the same ordeal again!!!
    thanks.
