Bought my T43 a month ago and two weeks ago its fan started behaving strange. Was browsing the web and found a thread that best describes the fan problem with my T43:

"When running on power, the fan is almost constantly ON.
When the fan is on, it doesn't make a constant sound. It does something
    like:

    brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Hmph brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Hmph brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
    Hmph ...........

the 'brrrrr' is a quiet soft sound, the 'Hmph' is a small bump in the sound, not something metalic or anything BAD, just that the fan makes a stronger sound for about half a second, something noticeable when you're working on it at 3AM and there's total silence."

Is this a common problem with T43s? Does it require any tech attention or it is something harmless? Is there a way to get rid of this strange noise?

I'd appreciate any advise you can give on this,

    Thanks, Sean :noisyfan:

T43s are more noisy cause the Sonoma Pentium Ms in them run hotter. When it is plugged in it is using the CPU at full power. One option would be to download Notebook Hardware Control and set it to conserve power even when plugged. It will run the CPU at 800Mhz reducing heat and fan usage. Good Luck.

what speed is your processor? that sounds really odd. One thing you could do is hold in F1 on startup, then go into the IBM BIOS Utility and set the processor speed to medium or low when on AC power, kind of defeats the purpose of having paid for a faster processor, but could help with the fan noise.

The T43's are the best notebook you can buy. The fan noise is minimal at best. It like my dad complaining that my cell phone gets warm on his ear after 30 minutes of talking. It's not that big of a deal. So the fan runs more on a T43 vs. T42.

Has anybody wondered weather Intel is sinking? The dual core chips from AMD are better, the Athlon 64 kills the Pentium 4. The only thing Intel has left is thier Pentium M line of Centrino processors. If only AMD can get their Turion 64 to perform a bit better they will run the table on Intel.

Then of course we will have an opportunity in the future to choose AMD over Intell in the Thinkpad series.

One more thing. IBM Thinkpads are still IBM Thinkpads. IBM retained complete control over thinkpad design. Lenovo will continue with the same IBM management and reseach and development team. The only thing different is that IBM will be owned and operated by Lenovo. IBM Thinkpad employees get Lenovo checks instead of IBM checks.

The fan noise on many T43 notebooks is *not* negligible! The constant buzzing is very audible on my laptop, and the acceleration problems that a number of ThinkPads are prone to is particularly irritating. Just because you say there is no noise doesn't mean that there isn't.

Fortunately, there's a fan control program in the works for the T43 (and any other ThinkPads it runs on, which seems to be quite a few) that can keep the fan noise down. I haven't tried it yet, but that may be the only thing standing between my T43 and the UPS guy.

If you think Intel is on its way out, you must have been living under a rock for the past few months. Well, perhaps not a rock, but you clearly haven't been frequenting hardware sites often enough to get an actual picture of where Intel is headed. Their roadmap is quite impressive. Of course, AMD hasn't been advertising their plans nearly as much, so it's difficult to say what the balance will be like later on.
