I got a t540p a couple weeks back. One thing I have noticed is that the fan comes on quite often and is fairly loud, though it sounds healthy. It,comes on for the most basic tasks like surfing the web and watching youtube. I am not doing any thing else while doing these tasks. Its a quad core i7 with 8 gb of ram. Surely it cant be stressed. What going on here?

Have you checked task manager to see if anything is eating away at your CPU?

Have you checked to see if your temps are unusually high?

One option is to use TPFanControl program - which lets you set your own fan profiles (and take control away from the BIOS) - you can choose the speeds for certain temperature thresholds.
