    Hi,
I just received a T60 Thinkpad that I ordered through Lenovo website.

    specs:
Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 1Gb RAM, 6 cell battery, 14" screen SXGA, 1300 ATI video card with 64Mb video memory, Windows XP SP2

I am hearing high pitched sounds from the fan from time to time. In a quite room its very audible. Its definitely louder than the HD read heads, and very annoying. :( Also there are some scratching kind of noises, it seems the fan is not mechanically stable.

Also, how long should the battery last? Mine lasts ~3 hours with wireless and some office work. Should it last more than 4 hours, as Lenovo claims?
Looking at previous posts it seems there is a large variation in battery life. What affects it? CPU usage, wireless, graphics?

Also, it seems my graphics card has 512Mb of video memory, when it was supposed to come with 64Mb, is this shared or what? Otherwise everything works GREAT, good speed, no freezes or crashes, and all the great thinkpad user features.

Is it wise to exchange the notebook for a new one, my main concern is the annoying fan noise?

    Thanks
    Yuri

Its probably a 128MB with HyperMemory. Did you download the Catalyst 7.4? Cuz mine has shown that. I have the X1400.

I have not downloaded the Catalyst 7.4. My graphics look pretty good, I played 3D intensive game no problem. Whats good about the Catalyst 7.4?

Any ideas on the battery life or the fan noises? Thanks. Much appriciated.

Running in low power mode will help with the fan noise if you can. Make sure your vents are unobstructed to ensure proper airflow. They tend to be optimistic when estimating battery life. Three hours doesn't seem unreasonable. The better the graphics card, the worse the battery life is.

Ditto on that. Also, to see if you can squeeze a little bit more battery life out of it, check your PowerPlay settings in the Catalyst Control Center; how you have that set can have a large impact when running on battery. Right around 3 hours sounds about right with the 6-cell, although how much time you get depends on what you do while on battery (browsing, gaming, idling, etc...) and how you have power saving options set up.
