    2G memory is $2K - Why?

If you select 1G you get the initial 512M (total 1.5G)

    Checking Crucial.com, 2G configuration is $1700+

Rule No. 1: (almost) never buy extra memory directly from the notebook/memory manufacturers! Buy from a place like newegg.com.

Who needs a 2Gb Dimm anyway? The $2K price would be for 3Gb total, right?

System default is 512M, adding 1G results in 1.5G. So I might assume adding 2G gets you 2.5G.

I'm used to developing with 2G of memory. It especially helps when running virtual machines.

I appreciate the comments on not buying from the notebook mfrs.. but my real question is... why is the T60's 2G config $2K?

    Even Crucial.com's memory 2G for Thinkpad T60 is $1500.

Why do Lenovo ask that much for it? Because they can. Suckers are born every minute.

I think its because they are giving you 1 stick of 2GB ram. They don't seem to offer 2 sticks of 1GB ram--this would be MUCH cheaper.

there are a lot of corporate customers out there who aren't going to deal with installing memory sticks on laptops just to save a measly $500

    Bingo!

For some reason, 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 SODIMMs are rediculously expensive, no matter where they're from. 1GB sticks, on the other hand, are available for $150 and under. If you want 2GB, then go with 1GB and install a second stick.

It seems that the initial 512M is built-in or a funky size.. otherwise you could buy a 1G + 1G and be done with it.

But the single 2G from crucial is $1500+, $2K from Lenovo

No, there is no built-in RAM in the t60, and lenovo doesn't get ram specially designed to confuse customers and technicians. When you order a thinkpad with 512mb RAM, it's got one stick of 512; 1gb will be one 1gb stick, and 2gb the same. It's really nice of them to do that, because it's really annoying to get 2x256mb so you have to replace both of them to get 1gb. If you want 2gb, preconfigure it with 1gb and then order a separate 1gb stick.

Are you really that surprised it's more expensive to order ram from lenovo than from crucial (or any other non-laptop-manufacturer)? I admit it did keep me up at night for the first couple weeks, but over time I've come to accept it.

    From Lenovo:
No I'm not surprised. I'm just frustrated that during build time they have such screw configurations. I'd prefer to put the memory in it I want. They changed the order to include 1G initial memory and I can install 1G later.
