    Hi,

About a month ago, I bought a Thinkpad W500. Great machine.

However, since yesterday, I seem to have a problem. When I close the lid, a cracking sound comes from the place where the black flat cable goes from the base to the screen. It only does so when closing the lid, with the laptop powered off or on, doesn't make a difference. It seems as it's coming from the inside of the screen.

Since I have the laptop, it hasn't left my desk yet, so nothing could have touched the cable or could have gotten in between there I suppose...

Anyone have an idea of what this could be? It's quite annoying and I'm afraid something is going to break :(

Do you have it on a level surface?

My T61p sometimes cracks but I noticed that it only happens if it's either not on a level surface or I open it a certain way putting pressure in a certain place. For me it has to be on a very level surface.

In any case a cracking sound is no good and you should do what ZaZ recommended.

Sounds like the ribbon connector is getting caught on the bezel. If you feel so inclined, I'd download the maintenance manual and follow the instructions to remove the palmrest, keyboard and bezel (all FRUs), then reinstall them carefully. That might fix it. Should not take more than about 15 minutes.
