I second how well the cooling system works. Running Minecraft on the W530 (my hottest game, oddly enough) leaves my lap cool; the only place with heat is the vent. My W520 runs a little hotter (though still only at the vent), but I haven't cleaned out any dust from the piping.

Using a laptop on your lap with legs closed is bad for male fertility ;)
And balancing a W530 on one leg is rather difficult.

I have no issue balancing with only one leg.

The other issue is legitimate though. Personally, I don't plan on having kids, so whatever :p.

Does anyone have the K1000M and do gaming? Whats the performance like with that? And I'm assuming no heat issues with the K1000M, as I've not heard of any with the K2000M.

I ask because I can't afford the upgrade, and I'll be (hopefully) making a DIY eGPU, but between now and then, I want to know what it can do, before I buy the laptop.

Also, obviously the 9-cell has longer life than the 6-cell, but two things bug me: I haven't seen many battery tests using the 6-cell, and those that do don't use the K1000M, and I don't know the power draw difference between those. I can't tell if I'll need the 6 or 9-cell.

The other thing, more of a personal preference, but does the 9-cell sticking out of the back bother you? Do you think it makes it feel substantially heavier than with the 6-cell?

Asking to anybody who wants to respond. :)

w/ the K2000M on battery, I doubt you'll get more then 3hrs w/ the 6 cell...I did backups on battery power and only got 3 hrs (expected 6hrs so I didn't plug it in)...

I'd really like to hear about this as well. My primary use of the W530 will be for software engineering (with one or two VM's running most of the time), but I'm hoping the K1000M can handle light gaming as well. The K2000M isn't worth the $250 upgrade for me since I plan to go the eGPU route for anything more serious (much better performance for about the same price).

Benchmarks can be found here: Lenovo ThinkPad W530 First Thoughts

Not sure why you'd want to run a Quadro on battery; most of the time you should be in the Intel GPU. I can run a battery drain test on my W530 though (6-cell, K1000M only, web surfing) if you like. I don't game much, so I don't have any new PC titles to test unfortunately.

And the 9-cell doesn't bother me at all. Some are bothered by how loose it feels, however. You can shake it up and down slightly, but only by about 1-4 degrees total. Certainly not enough to be worried about the construction of the battery compartment, though it can make a bit of a rattling noise if you shake it a lot.

I've heard others say that their machines came with drivers calling the graphics card 2100M. If you update to newer drivers (the ones that end in .80 on Lenovo's site), that should show the graphics correctly as K2000M.

They said that 2100M was the pre-release name of the K2000M, so it's supposed to be the same. But then again, with nvidia you never know...
