    Hello thinkpad-guys,

I will be very appreciated if you help me. Is it possible to obtain 16 GB memory on W700 by using two 8GB SO-DIMMs? It's very importrant for me because I will use CAD and other tools that need that kind of memory in big projects. Thanks for advices!

I don't think they're making 8GB sticks of memory yet.

if they ever plan to release this sized modules, i can imagine one would cost at least 1000 USD, so four of them is probably enough for you to get another 2 laptops.

Core i7 doesn't support 32 GB, does it?
I'm seriously. Core 2 support up to 16 GB. So can W700 give it to them...

i thought the intel chipset for the Penryn supports 8 gigs max over 2 dimms.

Q43 supports 8Gb too but Dell M6400 with Q43 support 16 Gb. I mean that.

because the M6400 has 4 ram slots and not 2 ram slots like the W700.

Either way, there are no 8GB SO-DIMMs on the market yet. Eurocom is has ETA for next month, but I'm skeptical since I haven't heard of any 8GB samples being tested (then again the world is pretty...)

It has nothing to do with the CPU at all. It is Chipset plus number of physical slots. If 8GB DDR3 DIMMS ever get cost friendly, W700 may get 16GB. 8GB DDR3 DIMMS may never get around to market in an quantity before DDR4 shows up.

In the end, there is no guarantee that the W700 BIOS will support it.

If you need 16GB in a laptop, get one that currently supports it through 4 DIMMS. It could be a major wait for DDR3 8GB SODIMMS to come out in enough quantity and demand to be affordable, if that ever happens at all. I see DDR4 8GB SODIMMS being cost effective and in demand in a few years, but not anytime soon with DDR3. Remember, it all comes down to demand.
