    Laptop Insurance

Now here's a thing, I'm having a hard time finding insurance for my W701 2500-2LG, the problem is the cost of replacement being well over £3K here in the UK which exceeds their limit.

Other problems are insurers typically require the laptop to be less than 3 moths old and not purchased from an auction site.

Does anyone have any information or suggestions about insurance?

@oceanbrave - You can try these insurers for your W701. I don't think they're that restrictive in terms of policy as you have mentioned.

    Hi Hearst555

Just had a quick look, the 1st one (JLT) was the one with the £3k limit, the other 2 quote at £250 a year, but possibly will insure but I think that's OTT, needs to be around £160 in my estimation (£3K was 125) I'll do some more shopping when I get back.

Got a bit of an another scare yesterday. BSOF, boot failures etc. Ran a memtest86+, with several hundreds of thousands of errors.

After the memtest the system simply didn't boot. Now it seems that I've hopefully pinpointed the issue to one of my aftermarket 4GB 1333 modules. I'm now running a memtest with the original 2GB memory card, and so far it seems to go trough without errors. And if it does, I'll install only 2x2GB aftermarket cards and run another memtest for them.

    ---------
Edit: Yup, I was right. It was one of the 4GB memory sticks. Now the computer works fine, apart from the fact that it has 8GB less RAM. I'll send both of the 4GB modules back, as I bought them as a kit.

What does Fn-F9 do on the ThinkPad W701? I've found the setup manual on the Lenovo site and it omits this key in the section where it lists the available functions, but it is marked with blue symbols on my keyboard, showing a display on the left and an up arrow on the right.

It is a shame that the W701 series appears to be discontinued without chipset refresh. I have used a W701 since November 2010 and while there were some crash issues earlier this year, believe it was due to gpu drivers acting up, it has been running smoothly for a few months. Probably the best laptop I have ever owned and glad I purchased before it was pulled from the Lenovo site.

First a question, can the W701 handle 8gb sodimm? If not currently might it handle 8gb sodimm after a future bios upgrade? I have 16gb currently and no immediate need for upgrade but it would be nice to know the W701 can handle the larger sticks when they become more economical.

Also, you mentioned upgradeability of the GPU, in theory, because of MXM 3.0. You might be interested in this real world test anecdote I just came across. The Radeon 6970m caught my fancy but after reading I will not be experimenting with GPU upgrade. My w701 has a FX 3800M which is adequate for my use however, the eyefinity of the AMD cards interests me more. Have built some boxes, and modified laptops in the past but wouldn't dream of hacking the Vbios to get a video card working. Oh well.

Riding the Flow: Is Thinkpad W701 MXM? Kind of. Upgradeable? Nope :(

8 GB modules are not in official compatibility list
Lenovo Support - Memory Compatibility - Notebooks
It still might work, but tread carefully.

Yup, it appears that only GPU "upgrade" possible is upgrading from 2800M to 3800M (and only to genuine Lenovo part).
