Was planning on doing a windows 7 clean install of my t420, but I can't seem to find the serial key? I was under the impression that the sticker would be on the underside of the laptop. If not on the underside where would it be?

    thanks for your help.

A lot of new laptops are starting to put the Windows COA underneath the battery, as on the underside of the laptop, after years have passed the COA would get rubbed off, requiring the purchase of the actual recovery media.

I wish this was the case with the old Sony Vaio I have. I tried to do a clean install to get rid of bloatware and the code was so worn that it couldn't be read. :( I took a picture of the Windows label on my Toshiba NB305 to ensure that I had a legible copy of the code and will do the same with the T520, though the Thinkpad comes with much less software than the others.

Worst case if it is rubbed off to the point where you can't read it, you can purchase the recovery media from XX manufacturer.

This is true and I had already burned the recovery DVDs for my machine. It was frustrating to be locked into using that since a consumer grade Sony is so full of bloatware. So I spend more time uninstalling that the recovery took. :(
