Can anyone explain the discrepancy to someone less technical like myself?

Looking at the X1 Carbon in the UK, but if I go with the most expensive i7 the maximum RAM I can order is 4GB, but if I order the mid range i5 model I can have 8GB RAM if I want?

    Basically - HUH?

Lenovo says the i7 with 8GB of RAM is coming soon (according to the recent Ars Technica review).

In the main X1C thread this issue was discussed and supposedly the reason for the delay is heat, although a number of people in the thread expressed scepticism about that claim.

Is the RAM soldered to the motherboard?

Yes it is. You won't be able to upgrade.
