I just received a refurb Thinkpad X1 and a bit nervous because it's a refurb.

while I was inspecting it, I noticed that I could see (what I assume to be) CPU fan wire exposed from the air vent. Could you take a look at the pics I just taken in the link below?

IBMMANIA >> TP Gallery - thinkpad X1 vent with exposed fan wire

Is it supposed to be exposed, like the pics, that way? or do I have a machine with incorrectly assembled fan module?

    helps appreciated! thanks!

It doesn't look like a fan wire. It's too big and most fan wires are short, leading into a harness. My guess would be the white lead from the wifi card antennae that should be tucked into a plastic shield that normally goes across the top of the fan vents. That does not look correct.

I do not have an X1 but have taken a ton of notebooks apart.

There should be a plastic sheets covering that area. There is no wire exposed in that area in my X1.

thanks for your comment. i guess mine came with incorrectly assembled fan module. can anyone else look at the pics i linked and chime in?

i'll probably end up taking it apart to see if i can assemble it correctly. what a waste of time!

found yet another video with the vent and wire that looks like mine

lead_org, could u compare yours to my pics and the above video one more time? i'm beginning to think maybe its designed that way and i might not have to take it apart...

one more question to lead_org: somewhat unrelated to the matter discussed here but if your X1 came from the factory with HDD, rather than SSD. I know that the rubber rail is smaller, and specifically designed for 7mm models such as X1 and T420s, but what about the HDD tray(metal casing)? is it the same as the regular 9.5mm ones, such as found in T420, T400, X201, etc? or is it also smaller to the regular thinkpad HDD tray, specifically designed for the 7mm models? help appreciated. thanks!

    thanks!
