So I replaced the Samsung SSD with an Intel x25-m SSD. I did this because I thought the Samsung was squealing / screeching / wheezing / buzzing; and I also found a good deal on the 160gb and thought a little upgrade in performance and size would be a good idea.

I found somewhere that the sound is due to the i7's power management when turbo-ed and not the drive. In my opinion it's not that either, since it seems to me the sound mirrors WiFi activity, which sometimes is also reflected in HD access. So no conclusive answer.

I'm not worried because the x201 has a long warranty to go and I backup every week but it's annoying.

    Anybody has had this symptom?

This is just power coils buzzing, nothing to be alarmed of.
HDD noise masks them, also HDD have more uniform power-usage patterns than SSD further masking it.

@OP - also, SSD's make no noise as there are no moving parts inside it. it has to be the adapter.

Also, does this happen when you're unplugged?

I'm not sure how warranty would help you. Last time when I went with a 3 weeks old T510 to a service complaining on CPU whine, they just ran a bunch of "standard" tests to make sure it works as expected... I don't think there is a noise test at all. So, I gained nothing....

PS: are you sure it's your SSD ?

Well coil itself is not a moving part. :)

It is most likely the electrical parts on your motherboard (capacitors) that emits the sound (google coil whine). It occurs on specific power draws, so changing the power scheeme might help (but then you might not be as power efficient). That's my theory at least. :)

I have this problem also. Did anyone get it fixed? Lenovo is sending me a box and I really hate sending my computer lol
the sound is gone when the compt is in low performance. W/ max performance, no matter with or without ac adapter, there's always this high pitch annoying sound

I have this problem as well, but strangely only when loading windows 7. Both an SSD and HDD does it. I ended up just passing it off as nothing.

I don't have any other OS so i can't test it's from windows only - I know that my other computer (which is a VAIO) also has some noise like this but not as loud. but the sound is quite noisy on this one - in a quiet office space, I can hear only my computer :))

When you say "WiFi related", I think it may actually be flash content related. If you are using Firefox, try the tweak found at the very last post at the bottom of this page:

HP Envy 14 - CPU WHINE POLL -Page 24

It worked for my X201i, but I still hear the whine whenever I youtube or run itunes.

EDIT: If you look at the end of that thread, a possible fix is to just swap out your wireless card for a new one.
