From all the leaked roadmaps we've seen, it looks like there is not going to be a "s" model for X220. X201s has been long gone too. But there is a mysterious upcoming X1 series that could be taking its place.

Also, that 1600x900 "leak" from the Japanese website was a loss in translation. The Japanese guy was simply "hoping" that that would be an option, like many of the people here. Google translate sucks, and many thought that that was a leak saying that high resolution screen would be available. That's not a leak at all, that's just a dream of one Japanese guy posted on the internet.

Unfortunately, I think the X1 may be the Ideapad referenced here. I'm likely to wait until something more gets leaked on it, but I don't have high hopes.

The fact that the roadmap was leaked from a business "webinar" leads me to believe that it would (hopefully) be in the Thinkpad line. Although sticking it in the Ideapad line makes more sense =/. Lets hope that's not the case.

I'm not sure how strong all your eyes are, but with that resolution on that screen it's not usable anymore. I would like to think I have better than average eyes. I'll always pick higher resolution, but this is too much.

This is only really a problem if you're using a legacy OS that's not resolution-independent. If you're using a modern OS, a higher-res screen is pretty much always a plus.

Are you sure? I though even Windows 7 and OSX was still resolution "dependent."

Well they aren't in the sense that they're not 100% vector based. Still, they're both quite easy to adjust for high-density screens: the fonts will scale just great, and the icons.(while still not vector images) are provided in resolutions suitable for use on some incredibly high-resolution displays (Mac OS X, for example, includes 512x512 versions of most/all of the icons.) Obviously if you run old applications that assume a specific resolution/pixel density then you're out of luck.

In Windows 7, system fonts and most icons are scalable. For example, SegoeUI is TTF (Bézier curves), as is Verdana. While the fonts are scalable, whether they are rendered beautifully (in smaller point sizes) on the screen depends on the quality of hinting instructions embedded in the font definition.

just wanted to confirm that the last few comments are true

higher resolution is ALWAYS a plus with just 1 exception because you can use windows' dpi scaling... if the GPU is not powerful enough to play games at the higher resolution, using a lower non-native resolution will result in crappy graphics

but sandy bridge's IGP should be good enough to handle up to 1600x900 on SC2 on low settings (i believe SB's IGP is approximately the same as my underclocked 9300m gs, and SC2 on low settings at 1600x900 is the limit for my gpu)

edit: nvm, sandy bridge's IGP is much better than even a stock 9300m gs, so it should be able to handle many games with no problem

Not really. They don't support it per se, they just get some configurations certified as being compatible with a few big distros.

Thanks much, man! This is great - Lenovo put the IPS on tablet too!

Does anyone know anything about these 2 screens? Pros/Cons?

    Edit:

This one looks to be an indoor, multi-touch screen:
12.5" HD, 300 NIT WV (IPS), 2 finger touch/5 finger gesture, Infinity Glass

This one appears to be outdoor, scratch resistant due to Corning glass:
12.5" HD, 300 NIT WV (IPS), Corning Gorilla direct bond, pen

Will the multi-touch still include pen input? Good to know they are using Gorilla glass. I think my Droid 2 has it and that screen is pretty dang tough.

The X220 datasheet does not specify NIT nor contrast ratio. The latest version of tabook ( Personal Systems Reference (PSREF) sheets) does not include the X220 - yet.

Interesting... the tablet models are also using normal voltage CPU now?

This must be a typo, it is listing both

    Intel® Core™ i7-2620M Processor (2.7GHz, 4MB L3 Cache)
    Intel® Core™ i7-620M Processor (2.7GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)

i7-620M is a previous gen CPU, and it has a 2.66Ghz clock speed and comes with 4MB Cache.

No 8- or 9-cell battery option for X220t. The 6-cell external battery is compatible with both tablet and non-tablet models.

Accessories lists the 41U3143 pen, which is compatible with the last generations. So I guess it's still Wacom. Let's hope both display versions have it.

    Other thoughts:
-What a shame there's no USB3 on the tablet version
-What a shame there's only USB3 on the most powerful non-tablet version
    -Finally digital video out
-Very nice with IPS also on non-tablet version

Don't think I'll upgrade to this generation. My x200s is still rock solid, and I'm still getting 6-8 hours battery on the 9 cell batteries. 23 hours sounds nice, but now when it adds more than an inch in thickness.

My understanding is that multi-touch is a combo, pen + multiple finger input. However, when the pen is near the screen it turns off the multi-touch feature to avoid interference. At least, that's what owners of X201t are saying:

    I'm sure it will.
While all iPad like tablets are rather oriented at "consuming the Internet content", these old-school ones are focusing on "content producing" and multi-touch is just an additional input interface.
At least they say something like that in the flyer:

Starts at $979, hope I can get some good student discounts!

    They got:
    • i5-2520M
    • 4GB DDR3
    • IPS
    • 6 cell+battery slice
for $1300. My config will be similar to that (minus the 4GB since I have 8GB waiting and minus the battery slice), nice price!

    Indeed.

    I would
    - pick the smallest & slowest hard drive (and get a SSD elsewhere)
    - pick the least amount of RAM (bought 8GB for $70 with a sweet deal last week)
    - probably leave out the slice battery (10 hours is good enough for me, I'll stick with the 9-cell)
    - the IPS screen is a non-optional option
    - I may pick the i7 unless it's a $300 upgrade. I have a few non-gaming applications that max out the CPU a lot of the time.

    +1.

-The 320gb 7mm Hitachi is $50-60 on newegg.
-I don't need anything more than the i3, which itself annihilates my T9400.
    -IPS

-Here's the big one. Will Lenovo whitelist msata ssd's since they're pcie? I only see an 80gb option and I'm sure it'll be ridiculously priced. The 40gb 310 is $99 on newegg.

I hope they would offer a resolusion in between the normal HD and HD+. The HD pixel density is too low, while the HD+ will get you blind since you haave to squint at the screen. If they do introduce a model with HD+ what is the pixel density on a 12.5" screen.

nvm= the pixel density would be 146.860478

It's a pipe dream now but I always thought the 1440x900 resolution was a nice compromise between 1366x768 resolution, which is a bit on the small side, and the 1600x900, which I definitely agree would be a little too squint inducing. An LED IPS 16:10 1440x900 would be amazing... too bad that's not happening anymore.

*Crosses finger* I like it, just hoping 2012 Thinkpad T-Series will have the same design concept as this one (the redesigned buttons below the screen and the mousepad of X220, which can be applied to the power button, and other shortcut/non-keyboard buttons).

Lets hope next years T-series and W-series get IPS options as well, the T420s with 1600x900 IPS screen would be nothing shorter than fantastic.

I have to agree that the 1366x768 option is somewhat low resolution if you ask me, the combination of small screen and low resolution doesn't make the ThinkPad X220 multitasking friendly which is sad considering it offering awesome specifications and IPS screen. About everything besides the resolution is perfect in my opinion.

The larger the screen gets, the more important it is to have wide viewing angles. That's why all 27" and larger desktop monitors are either IPS or *VA, and that's also why IBM and Lenovo used to offer IPS for their 15.0" panels (which were the larger at that time). So, if Lenovo feels compelled to offer IPS for a 12.5" laptop, it's extremely likely that the T and W Series will get IPS as well.

Yeah I wish Microsoft fix that, given that a lot of new screens have a bit higher resolution per screen size, unlike before.

All I can say: IPS? More of that please. :)
