Here is the spec sheet for the x220!
http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/ww/wci/us/ww/pdf/x220_datasheet.pdf
The interesting things:
1. Available IPS display!!! This will please a lot of people here!
2. Available USB 3.0 port
3. Available with mSATA SSD (80GB intel 310 ssd)
4. Slice battery (23h battery life combined with 9 cell I'm guessing).
5. Improved battery life: 9h with 6 cell, 15h with 9 cell
6. VGA and DisplayPort directly on the notebook
The maybe not so good things depends on your point of view:
1. No button touchpad (makes it larger but...)
2. New latching system. Hard to see how it works but we'll see I guess.
3. 16:9 display (1366x768) but we all knew that already
Overall, looks like a nice update to me!

Damn, even the IPS screen is only 1366x768. T420s it is, I guess, unless there's still an 's' model with a higher resolution. I get the feeling that they've consolidated to one X200 model, since this is less than 3lbs. Meh, I'll wait til the reviews, maybe the IPS screen will win me over. Noise and real world battery life will probably be the tie breaker for me.
Notice that only the i7-2620M has USB 3.0 -
IPS display on normal X220 that is something i would like to see. And that long battery life is good news for many people whom carries their laptop without a power adapter.
-
On page 3 (footnote): The ThinkPad X220 has Linux® Certifications for Redhat®, Novell® & Unbuntu. -
If the vertical res was higher this would literally be the perfect machine, but close enough.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Want mine with:
- 2.5GHz i5-2520M
- IPS Screen (depending on price)
- Lowest Win 7 option (have Ultimate)
- Lowest amount of ram (have 8GB DDR3-1333 already)
- Lowest hdd (have Intel G2 ssd)
- USB 3.0 port
- 6-cell
- Lowest Intel 6000 series wifi card
Want lots of goodies, plan to actually keep this for at least 5 years (vs getting an Acer 3810T then 1830T in the past 2yrs). Hope I can get some good student discounts.
Also, is only the i7-2620 available with USB 3.0? -
Looks like USB 3.0 is available only on the i7 variant. Too bad....
A. -
I'm kind of surprised it comes with the MSATA option. Did the T420s end up having it? I know there was some contention, and being able to have two SSD's for my VM network would be another pro for the X220.
-
-
Holy Cow!
The only thing I'm hesitating was giving up the AFFS modded X200 screen! With IPS screen, I'm definitely getting the X220!!!! -
I am thinking about it, I don't need two ultra-portable (the IPS is the last straw). I wonder when will x220 be shipping.
-
I wonder if the base models with get the IPS option or is some how just for the tablet models only.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Man really...IPS on 1368x768...? Just like the Precisions and Elitebooks having IPS on 1920x1080..
-
-
-
Yep, there's an IPS display on iPad too which is even smaller.
I think now the only question is... how much is it going to cost. -
-
With a 1600x900 it would be perfect.
-
Well well. Many of us pleaded and pleaded with Lenovo to offer IPS displays on (non-tablet) ThinkPads, arguing that there is definitely sufficient demand to make the venture worthwhile for Lenovo.
And, here it is. IPS display on a (non-tablet) ThinkPad.
Let's hope Lenovo sells enough X220 laptops with the IPS option. -
It's a great sign. Thank you Lenovo! We love ya!
-
The machine is my dream machine. if only they could only put it in a 13" form factor with 1600x900 with the IPS screen of course. Around 1.1 in thickness. I don't think Lenovo they will not produce any 13" anytime soon, I will settle with this.
-> We need to show that we are willing to price premium for it, or else on their next refresh we might not have that option. -
-
-
The Asus EEE 121 tablet also has an IPS screen and that lower volume(even compared the the X220) 12in tablet. My Vaio isn't an IPS display, an 11in TN display that can put many displays to shame. It's not uncommon to see a hight end display on a niche, or niche-like notebook.
I don't think think Lenovo will produce a 13in device since it seems like they are moving their 11in-12in devices to a 11.6in form factor, and their 12-13in devices to a 12.5in form factor. I guess we will see if their competitors will follow(with the 12.5in screen size, as 11.6in now seems to be the standard). -
-
I wonder if they'll release the IPS option right away.
-
Asus laptop is a not true business class laptop and their keyboard layout sucks.
-
Plus, I was just using Asus as an example of another compact device with an IPS screen. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
By the way, what is IPS and why is it so great?
-
Any1 have a slight clue when this'll be released? Need to know so I can get rid of my other stuff for it. Thx.
-
-
6cell will get 9hr? that'll be great!
-
I wonder if the 9 cell slice battery will work with it. You'd think they would boast about the battery with the 9 cell slice, if it was compatible. If it's not, then that's a shame, it'll get less battery than the T420 with the 9 cell slice.
Anyways, I can't wait to see the real life battery life! Especially compared with the T420. I never could have imagined that we'd see 15 hours of battery life on a laptop, I thought we'd have to go fuel cells before that really happened. But rats, here I am stuck on a sub 3 hour battery life laptop! -
Good on Lenovo to finally come up with the specs for X220. Now on to waiting for the X220t announcement. Hopefully, the tablet with retain the IPS.
-
but i dunno, anything can happen. -
Anyone think lenovo will lock out non-oem msata ssd's. I can't even imagine how much they'll ask for them.
-
What do you guys think would be the base starting price for Thinkpad X220?
-
Anyone think they moved to a glass trackpad like the Elitebook now has, or the Macbook line?
-
The starting price might be around 1000 and 200 more for the ips screen.
-
specs look great, I hope the ips screens eventually make it way up to the T/W series
-
It's time for all the people who pissed and moaned about not having better screen options to put up or shut up.
The only thing I wonder about is supply. It seems like every time a better screen is offered, it goes out of stock like with the T60, the super bright on X201t or even the radiance LCDs on the Envy. The X series is a very popular notebook. Lenovo better have a steady supply lined up. All in all it's great news. -
They could as they are the only manufacture I know of that is using the 12.5in screen; but, conversely that could also mean since they are the only one using that non-standard screen size there maybe a limited number of manufactures that make it so supplies could easily get short?
-
And for the record, I really didn't pissed and moan about a 12" X series. I complained about the 14" screens on the T400, T410 and T410s. The screen on my W510 is fab and my T61p 1680x1050 screens rock.
But it is a good sign. Can't wait to see the X1 specs now. -
-
I've been thinking about it and I know I'll get blasted for saying this, but is there merit for such a good screen in a 12" notebook? I've been playing with a X200T the last couple days and have come to the conclusion that I'd need to get an external monitor/dock setup with a screen this size. Does that then negate the need for a nice native screen (I'm not saying it does)? I'm torn between the T420s (which now has a dimmer screen), the X220 and whatever the X1 is.
My T400 is on ebay, but I think it'll be prudent for me to take it down and wait till May for the X1 to do anything. -
-
-
Well hopefully their 12in offering isn't just the 12in Probook(which wasn't released in North America).
