I've decided to replace my T60 at work with an X300. Probably a bad move I know, but I don't do much at work. Mostly office and internet. All I need from it is to stay on 8 hours a day, I'm pretty sure it can handle a task like that.

I updated the laptop via system update and scanned it with mcafee on Wednesday, so I left it on until this afternoon. Before going home I decided to backup using rescue and recovery. I left for a meeting at the end of the day and got held up. I didn't make it on time and the office was closed and the key with someone that lives far away. The power management was on "maximum performance" and the laptop will stay on until Sunday morning, or even Sunday afternoon.

Should I worry, or can the X300 handle it?

Call the fire dept! But really, any computer worth it's salt can handle being on for extended periods of time.

    lol

There is no problem with leaving it on for 96 hours. You could leave it on for 3 years and "in theory" there should be no problem.

The only thing that I try to routinely maintain is the laptop fan by using a can of air to blow out the dust. Its much more of a pain to replace a fan in a laptop than on a desktop machine.

I was imaging a couple of notebooks (T61s) and left them on while I went on vacation for a week since I wasn't in a rush to get them done and I knew our SMS server was going to push a ton of stuff to them over a day or so anyway.

Notebooks in general are not as fragile as many people think.

Like a previous poster said, any laptop that's working properly and the vents aren't being obstructed should have no problems being left on for long periods of time. ThinkPads especially. :)

Thanks guys! Now I can sleep.

I know how strong thinkpad are, it's just that the X300 seems so fragile compared to say a T or R series.

I never turn off my laptops - not even Standby - did it for my good old Dell 700m - highest uptime was about 38-40 days (download a lot of stuff), had it not being for memory fragmentation and window bugs - it would have stayed on for longer.

My R61 had an uptime of 5 months before I turned it off to upgrade the RAM and clean it.

That would depend on your OS (for windows, XP Pro or Vista Business and up is required)and how you have thing set up
