I'm an engineernig student and going to purchase IBM Thinkpad X40, however, there are so many people stated that X40 has slow performance sine it uses 1.8-inch HD. Is it true that 1.8-inch HD = 2.5-inch HD 4200 rpm? Will X40 be able to run "MATLAB", "Visual Studio.net 2005 beta" and "MAPLE"?

    Thanks

That is the one thing that sucks about the x40. That and the small battery in the standard setup. Your programs will run, but will be slower. If you want something similar, take a look at the x31. It is a little heavier, but the hard drive is upgradeable and it has much better battery life in the standard setup. You can still get them from IBM or ebay if you want to go that route. Just make sure you buy from a reputable seller. I'm sure the new x series will be coming out soon if you want to wait to see what that offers.
