Hey guys. I have followed this board for some time now. Great topics and lots of helpful advice. In fact, I even decided on a Thinkpad x61 due to strong recommendations on this board :)

I have been fairly happy with my purchase except for one problem:

..whenever I plug in battery, the laptop OVERHEATS like crazy! At first I thought it was the same complaints everyone had about the "hot palmrest", but this heat is pretty substantial and comes out from BOTTOM and KEYBOARD. I can feel the heat emitting out!

Has anyone else had this problem?? If so, what can I do to fix it? Do I have a bad battery? Or is X61 poo?

As of this moment, I have to take out my batter if i want to run on AC. The difference is huge - so much cooler.

    1) Check your power settings in Vista
    2) Make sure that your fans are working
    3) Make sure the vents are not obstructed
    4) Clean the unit of any dust using a powerful vacuum cleaner and a canister of compressed air

    5) Can you tell us where exactly the heat is coming from?

Do an actual check of the temperatures for CPU etc and post them here.

mnial, you say "...whenever I plug in battery...". Does that mean you don't have the battery in most of the time? i.e. you operate it with the power supply and without the battery inserted?

I have noticed that too. The only difference is that the underneath of the X61 gets really hot when is plugged but only when I keep it on my knees (usually when i'm in bed). Otherwise, when it's on the desk it's not that hot.
