My new ThinkPad T60 came with Symantec Client Security and I have never used this software before. I have Norton System work 2005 but it is a hog.

What other alternative do I have to protect my laptop without eating too many resources?

    Thanks.

Uninstall the entire norton system crap and install the following programs:

NOD32 (Very good anti-virus and low system resource)
    Ad-aware personal (remove spyware)
    Spybot ( immune spyware)

There are many other good programs but these 3 are a must in my opinion.

Where Can I buy Nod32? Are these available in the store such as office depot? I have used ad aware before and I have liked it. If I am not mistaken it is made by a Swedish based software company called Lavasoft.

    Thanks for the feed back.

Nod32 is a pretty well known anti-virus program I'm sure you can find it in major stores. If not, you can always buy it directly from their website.

You could use free antivirus programs like Avast and AVG.

Sygate Firewall and ZoneAlarm Firewall are also examples of good free firewall programs.

i vote for mcafee total protection... or you can go with other of their products that may suit your needs.

i'va always trusted mcafee... i have a 7yr old desktop here that uses one... haven't had any attacks or viruses that made my PC gone awol...at least not yet

Use NOD32, Kaspersky, or BitDefender for Antivirus protection. Zone alarm is good for a firewall. Ad-Aware & Spybot is good for further protection against spyware and malware, but I personally don't like them deleting important files that leave me with error messages ;).

I always set people up with BitDefender. Internet Security is great for those without much of a clue (the interface got hugely better with v10), and Professional Plus for people who want an interface geared more towards power.

Kaspersky looks nice too. There have been a bunch of AV and firewall threads in the software forum lately.

Running Symantec Antivirus Corporate on my X41, it works great and it's not a big resource hog.

    Stay away from Norton

Kaspersky is I'd say one of the best just try it!

Kaspersky and NOD32 are great AV programs. I use Kaspersky on my Desktop and NOD32 on both my laptops.

What do you guys think about McAfee? In a recent Consumer Reports, they were rated number 2 behind Norton. Yet, everyone seems to hate Norton. Do most feel the same way about McAfee?

    Yes

They've both become marketing firms first and foremost, and security research firms as a secondary function. They load up the computer with bloated clients and update engines. Then they make it all rather difficult to uninstall.

Consumer Reports very rarely knows what they're talking about.

If you want to be frugal about your security (as I am) after getting rid of the factory installed bloatware, get:

    Avast anti-virus
    Comodo firewall
Spybot S&D (run the resident protection, teatimer I think)
    Ad-aware SE
    Hi-jack This!

I haven't had any problems running these on both my laptop and desktop. They all seem to work well and don't take up a lot of resources.
