Recently I purchased a Thinkpad W530 and replaced the hard drive with an intel 520 ssd. I am using it as a desktop and turned off the monitor and also using an external monitor and external keyboard and mouse.

I noticed a weird problem, I chose the Maximum Performance Power Plan in the Power Management which means it will never turn off the monitor and put the computer to sleep. I also double checked in the windows 7 power options it is set this way. But still, This Thinkpad put itself to sleep once it's idle for 5 minutes(or less, I did not really used a timer). What could cause this problem?

    Thanks,
    Gordon

Go to Control Panel => Power Options => Change when the computer sleeps, this should give you a list of options of when the computer will dim and fall asleep. It should be "Never" when plugged in if the sleep is configured in your case. Does your computer have startup window stating "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"?

I double checked that in Windows 7 laptop was never put to sleep.

I uninstalled the Thinkpad Power Manager and restarted the system a couple of times. seems like the problem goes away. The cause of this problem could be that Thinkpad Power Manager and Windows 7 power manager have conflicts.

I've never had Windows 7 and Power Manager have an issue, perhaps your Power Manager was corrupt and reinstalling it fixed it.

I was able to reproduce the problem, It's unlikely the Thinkpad Power Manager is the culprit since it's already uninstalled.

Every waking up from sleep by typing on the external USB keyboard or moving USB mouse would go back to sleep after 1 or 2 minutes idling, but waking up by pressing the power button on thinkpad would just be fine. and I can't wake up the laptop by typing on the laptop's own keyboard(except for the fn key) and mouse.

    So weird, any explanations? Thanks

Had this problem as well, but only when closing the lid (even though it was set to do nothing when plugged in).

Did a fresh install and only installed the drivers fixed it for me (was going to do it anyway so it wasn't a problem)

I am using a USB hub to connect to the ThinkPad and I am using a Logitech Wireless Mouse and a wired keyboard to connect to the USB hub.

I connected the USB hub to the USB 3.0 port, the problem went away, strange

I think I found the reason.

Apparently starting with Vista, Microsoft added a registry key to specify the sleep timeout from an unattended wakeup. The default value of this key is 120 seconds. There's a nice article about it here: Sleep Return Timeout for Unattended Wake Up
