    Hi

Are the stated resolution the maximum resolution, or are these fixed? Ie if I buy a 1400x1050 laptop can I then reduce the resolution to 1024x768?

it's the number of pixels for the screen, so the number of pixels the screen can at the most show.
So if you decide to let the screen view 1024*768, that's ok, it just can't let you view anymore then for example 1400*1050(which is btw a great resolution

If you run a 1400x1050 screen at 1024x768 it will look blurry.

You can reduce the resolution but notebook displays look best at their maximum resolution, unlike CRT displays, which also work well at lower resolutions.
