Does the supervisor password purely restrict manually changing the bios settings, or does it restrict hardware changes?
That is to say, can I upgrade the memory (2GB to 4GB) and replace the hard drive without any problems?

The only time you'll need to worry about the BIOS and Ram settings is this:
If you're using Windows XP and your Ram exceeds 2gb, then, you'll need to
access the BIOS system to make more Ram available (viewable) to your O.S.
Essentially, XP can "see" up to 3gb of Ram, although you may've installed say, 4gb.
And mind you, Lenovo is the only brand of notebooks where you'd actually need to access the BIOS system to fix this, simply because they use the best (and most complicated) BIOS system around.
