I posted earlier about my used thinkpad x40 (just bought it off ebay) crashing, screen going blank, shutting down etc. I ran a lot of diagnostics which also froze, making it hard to determine the problem. I finally handed it to a computer tech who found the problem was overheating.
He has reapplied thermal grease which helped somewhat, but says the fan is not responding adequately to high temps. He is going to try to update the bios to see if that gives more control to the fan (paraphrasing here, may be butchering). Basically right now the computer runs ok under light use (surfing) but still overheats and shuts down on intensive ones like virus scanning.
Any suggestions that come to mind with someone familiar with an older x40s? I see this is a common problem in newer thinkpads but perhaps someone knows a tack to take with this older one.
Thanks

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, at this point the whole thing has been taken apart and reassembled and cleaned within an inch of its life, but still overheating. Darn it.
I love this little guy too and I hope there is a solution to keep it from dying prematurely. -
