i finally made up my mind to get the thinkpad x61s as my very first laptopbut im confused with the ThinkPad X6 UltraBase... is it necessary to play DVDs, CDs, CD-R(W)s, etc?

No, you can get an external USB DVD drive to play your discs. It's a lot cheaper than getting the UltraBase.

one nice benefit with the ultrabase, though, is that you can use it as a docking station.
for example, it can be hooked up permanently at your desk to a monitor, speakers, printer, and keyboard/mouse.
then, you come home, and click it in, and then your laptop will feel like a desktop.
but it is kinda pricey, so use wise judgment. just for reference, you can get an external USB cd-rw drive for about 60 dollars -
They do on occasion go on sale or are are offered at a discount when buy the machine.

i received my X61s few days already. Although the screen isnt as bright as vaio, this is like a perfect machine for me. It has long battery life, linux friendly and allow users enable virtual tech in bios. Of course, i got to agree with many that the quality is outstanding. Seriously, I was amaze the quality and the price i paid for. I used 12" macbook, 11.1" vaio and many other expensive notebook before. This is the cheapest and the best.
I didnt get the base thing. cough* $199 or $100 sale price. I rather get a $300 desktop. besides, you can always run virtual dvd rom and run/play ISO. Of course, if u have difficulty using those programs, u can purchase an external dvd rom. I would also recommend u check out tailormade program, fatwallet cash back and share holder purchasing programs.
