    Dear Lenovo,

I am not an expert. Simply a professional doctor.

BUT i can very well observe that ThinkVantage System update is no longer providing me updates. It always say "System is upto date".

Whereas the web site shows that new updates are out since 3-4 wks.

Besides even if no updates are available with ThinkVantage System update, its particular "interface" of three colums with tab headings like "critical" updates, "recommended" updates & "accessories/upgrades" are not there. These tabs are not there.

    What to do?

Rest of the system is working fine.

Do nothing if it's running well. I am a firm believer in not updating unless there's a need to do so like something's not working. The only thing I've updated on my R60, other than the latest service pack, is the BIOS, but only so I could upgrade to a Core 2 Duo.

    ^^ thats very bad.

you should do updates for all software if it provides an increase in performance.

not just "if everything is working, then leave it." what if theres an update for your wireless card that increases your speed by 2x, you won't update because yours is fine?

In that case, my wireless card would have had a problem if it were running at half speed. I would update after I had seen enough other (credible) users update theirs and report back that their systems hadn't been bricked by it.

I prefer a stable system that works rather than the roller-coaster ride of constant updates.

I also don't use the automatic updates from anyone other than my anti-virus/spyware defs. I pick and choose when and what gets updated rather than leaving it to the whims of Microsoft, Lenovo, Adobe, HP, etc.

Hey doc....you may need to up date your systems updater. (as silly as that sounds) if you go to the support and downloads page in Lenovo support and enter in your machine info, it will tell you what you can manually download for your machine and will give you links to do so.

I understand both side of the disucsion on whether or not to update or leave a working systme alone. I've done some updates that created issues for other programs and others that go just fine. It's not a perfect world.

I dont upgrade some things unless they break, but for others like wifi and video drivers, I usually always have the newest ones.

Yeah, I update as little as possible, unless theres a real good reason to update a certain piece of software. I did a blanket thinkvantage update once and I believe it was a cause of an unending string of BSODs. Had to roll back using vista's rollback option.

If an update gave me 2x the performance there was already something wrong. I don't even use virus software. I have True Image backups for all my machines, which I can put back at any time. I also have multiple backups of my data.

    1. there is no problem with your "working" wifi card to begin with, with the old drivers. I'm just saying that would you upgrade your wifi drivers if a new driver gave you a performance increase.
    2. i've never seen a driver update ever BRICK your laptop.

    LATEST DRIVERS ARE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED.

Someone asked me to upgrade their notebook to a Core 2 Duo so they could run 64 bit Vista. I bought a CPU on eBay for the upgrade, but they backed out on me. They offered me $50 for my troubles and to cover any losses I may incur reselling it on eBay. I got a great price on the CPU. I decided to swap it with my T2300e and sell that one. Total cost to me was about $30. Otherwise I probably would have kept the original.

Also keep in mind, a lot of the updates are for thinkvantage software to be compatible with new laptop models. Therefore, for someone like me with a t61, there's no benefit to update my software just because it now has support for t400, t500 series.

You can click on the update and get more information to see what the purpose of the update is. A lot of the updates themselves tell you in their description that it may not be necessary to download it.

In addition, bios updates are a tricky situation. Unless there is a good reason to do it, don't do it, since that can brick your system.

I'm not saying to not update your system. You definitely want windows updates for security and whatnot. Same thing with antivirus, firewall etc. I do update many things on my laptop. I just don't blindly update everything just to get the newest driver version.

i said a new update that improves performance by double. NOT that your wireless card is running at half speed.

would you update if your wireless card were working "normally fine" with your old driver?
