Rather ignorant question so pease bear with me... I bought a monitor that doesn't come with VGA cable but does include a D-SUB cable that may be DVI? (2 groups of 9 pins in square shape: 3x3 and 3x3) I don't see anywhere on my x220 that this cable could fit, so does it mean I have to get a VGA cable for my new monitor (which has both VGA and DVI ports)?

    Thanks :)

    Yes, that's DVI.

You could get a VGA cable, but, depending on the specific DVI used by this monitor, a VGA-DVI-I/A cable or VGA-DVI-I/A adapter is also possible. VGA being an analog signal, that means the monitor would have to support DVI-analog as well, which needs anything non-D type (check monitor specifications).

If, on the other hand, it's the digital type (DVI-D), then you might as well make use of your X220's DisplayPort (=digital) by deploying a DP-DVI-D cable.
