This morning I plugged the power charger for my Lenovo R61e into the wall socket, turned it on and there was these popping noises (it sounded just like capacitors blowing), followed by that burnt electronic smell - immediately I switched the power off - very glad that the laptop was not damage. Seems the charger has burnt itself out, 2 weeks old, sending back under warranty, just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?
Worst bit is that I'm currenty on study break for uni exams, now the laptop is useless...

I haven't heard of too many instances of that happening; could it have been a power surge through the lines? In terms of being able to use your notebook until you get a replacement, you might see if you can find a universal adapter; I believe Kensington and Targus, for example, make a universal adapter that should work with your system.

I'm on my second power adapter (in 3 months) for a T61p. Luckily I haven't experienced what you have, but both units emit a buzzy/staticky sound when the laptop is powered off. I'm worried this might be a precursor to the situation you had. I've kept the second one as it's exactly the same as the first. I was hoping it was "normal".

a friend of mine had his gateway charger die so he got a cheapy one on ebay. So I'm at his house going to grab a manual for the 1979 RX7 were working on and the batt's really low so i plug the cable in and nothing happens. I yank on the cable and all of the sheets move too. I then PEEL off the inverter brick from the sheets (this was on the bed that was half covered in carborator parts) and it had almost completly melted....
