I have a tiny ding on my T61P screen. I feel dumb but here's what happened. I was getting out my USB mouse, in a hurry, and the cable swung around and the metal USB plug smacked into my screen and made a tiny little ding. It appears to have killed a pixel or two. It's so tiny, it basically looks like I have 2 dead pixels next to each other now.

I have accidental damage protection, and I am sending it in for depot repair for a different issue anyway, do you think I should ask to have the screen replaced while it's there? OR, do you think it is too risky, because they might replace it with a worse screen, one that is dim or has more dead pixels? This screen, before I damaged it, had no dead pixels. It's an LG screen and it seems bright and the colors seem good to me. So I'm wondering if it's worth risking getting a dim, grainy screen like if they gave me a Samsung screen or something.

What would you do? I don't even see the damaged spot unless I'm looking for it, it's really tiny.

Since it sounds like you have a screen you like, LG I'm guessing, and it sounds like a small problem. I would 1. send it in shortly before my accidental warranty was about to run out. (maybe 6 months before). or 2. send it in for repair when it starts really bugging me.

Haha that is probably a good idea. Most of the time there are dust flecks on my screen bigger than the damage spot. It really is a good screen and it would suck so bad if they replaced it with a dim crappy screen. I would rather have a nice screen with a tiny dead spot than a screen that has no dead pixels but the whole thing looks like crap.

It's funny it's not exactly a dead pixel either, for example it is impossible to see on a white screen, you can only see it when you have dark colors on the screen in that area, it causes a tiny spot where the color is slightly different. So it's like... not a dead or stuck pixel...more like a damaged or retarded pixel...

Bah its a few pixels out of what... a million or so? You have the luxury of getting a new screen after your own mistake, you also have the luxury of a few years to think about it. :) Maybe in a few months it will be all LG screens and you wont have to worry about getting a samsung?

I have a stuck pixel that is impossible to see. Seriously I have tried putting a myriad of colors behind it but nothing will make it show. The only way I can see it is when running a dead pixel test, then it shows sometimes as white, sometimes as red... very weird.

If you ask yourself if you should have it replaced, then you probably should, otherwise it will constantly bug you. Just get it over with.

Well for me it's mostly an issue of, should I take advantage of the fact that I'm already going through the hassle of sending it to the depot. I actually never notice the spot when I'm using the computer, in fact I physically am not able to see the spot from a normal reading distance of 2 feet or more, I only worry if one of my friends will go looking for dead pixels and find the spot, and give me a hard time about it since I did pay a lot for this laptop and it's supposed to be nice :D But it would suck to tell them to replace it, and get a screen that was worse...

By the way, I didn't mention this earlier, but it's kind of interesting... When the damage first happened, the spot was a LOT bigger, I just about crapped my pants. The plastic was kind of dented in from the impact and it was causing a rather large spot of distorted colors, like when you press your finger on the screen. However, I "massaged" the spot with the back of my fingernail, pressing down as hard as I could without breaking the screen. That seemed to flatten it out again and the damage mostly dissappeared, only leaving a tiny spot that looks like 1 or 2 dead pixels. Crazy huh?

I know I should be more careful, I guess I am hard on laptops lol, it's a good thing I got a Thinkpad, they are tough and hopefully it can survive me :) That's one thing I like best about Thinkpads, they are solid and tough, so many laptops are fragile. My friends can not believe it when I pick up my laptop by the screen, or push on the back of the screen and the colors don't distort, they are amazed how solid it is, especially the screen and hinges. This is an actual quote my friend said when I held out my laptop holding it just by the top edge of the screen - "If I tried that on my laptop the screen would snap in half! Even when I just open and close my screen it feels like it's gonna break!" lol...

Dude, if you keep constantly fighting with yoursel about what should you do with that spot, just get it replaced since you are sending it in anyway, otherwise, I guarantee you, when it comes back you are gona say: "damn I should have had it replaced"

Did you get your laptop for yourself or for your friends? :) Stop doing crazy stuff with it! :)

I concurr. Its not even a matter on whether you can 'sometimes' notice it... you know it's there and it obviously bothers you enough to talk about it. Having invested the money on the additional accidental coverage, its on its way there, might as well try and get it replaced as well. If you have a WSXGA+ model, the majority of screens being installed are LG. When I got my screen replaced, I gave the person the FRU# that ensured I got another LG and couldn't be happier with the screen replacement. When it comes to physical apperances with a laptop, I'm not overly concerned with blemishes. But when it comes to the actual performance of a laptop in terms of internal components, keyboard, and screen, I'd get it fixed. Those are the aspects of the computer you need to always rely on to work w/o issue. Especially considering you paid additional for that coverage.

keep breaking it and sending it in until you get one you like.
