Ever tried to watch a movie on your brand new T61 only to have the DVD drive continuously spin to max RPM and drown out the audio? I searched high and low and never found a solution for Vista. Apparently the only way to control the DVD RPM in Vista was this $50 tool called AnyDVD: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html Well, there's another option:
Apologies if everyone already knows about this one, but luckily for us Thinkpad users there's a free solution right in our own BIOS: DVD 'silent' mode! Just dig through the settings and there it is![]()

Yep the BIOs holds many secrets!
-
This option is also present in the Power Manager, Global Power Settings tab, Power management options section, Advanced button.
-
I would also like to take note that putting the optical drive in silent mode might decrease performance of the disc being used.
-
The software solution is better for someone who still wants to maintain fast data read/write speeds since it allows individual control over DVD operating modes. -
I apologize for getting off topic, but everytime I see a post for AnyDVD or CloneDVD2 I can't help but get excited. Everyone should go download the free trial for both of these apps and give them a try.
If you do try them out, just to give you some help getting started, just download/install and launch AnyDVD. That's really all you need to do for AnyDVD to disable copywrite protection on "any DVD" you insert into your DVD drive. Then follow this guide: CloneDVD2 Manual
The biggest problem where noobs get stuck is on the second page of CloneDVD (the title configuration page). Make sure to change the drop down menu to DVD-5 when using standard single layer DVD +/-R disks.

Tip of the day: reduce DVD playback rpm/noise
