Well, my question is about the Ideapad Y580. I recently ordered one, but am hesitant to open it because I bought it from Newegg (I had store credit, so it had to be from Newegg). They do not allow refunds on opened laptops for some stupid reason.
Anyways, I want to know one thing before I open mine: is it somewhat comfortable to use/ is it portable? By portable, I mean the ability to use it comfortably on your lap and take it to places like the living room, etc. At around 6 pounds, it's a bit on the heavier side of things.
So, does the weight/size of the Y580 have much effect on how comfortable it is to use on your lap/on a bed? Or is it one of those laptops that you just leave on your desk? I really want to be sure of this before I open it.
Thanks.
P.S. I know this is a repost, but I realized that this was the more appropriate section to post it in, and I can't move threads. Sorry.

Before ultrabooks, this was the standard size of laptops. Do you not have any older 6 pound laptop to try? IMO, this laptop is plenty portable for anyone who isn't an 80 pound woman. Its plenty comfortable in my lap.

TBH my Y500 surprised me; I have a friend with a similarly-specced Alienware 14" that is *much* heavier feeling than this. I swear they lined the bottom with concrete. -
It is heavier than I'd like, but the power brick is more of an annoyance for me. Still enjoy having it though

I received my Y580 about a month ago and although I am really happy with it, it's not really what I would call portable. I agree with JohnJacob, it's heavier than I'd like it to be but with a nice backpack lugging it around is bearable. The main problem is not so much the actual weight of the laptop but the rather flimsy lid-design which makes me really take care when putting it down, or in and out of the backpack. I used to own an older DELL Inspiron which seems to be able to take a lot more abuse than the Y580.

I'm a college student and I carry my laptop around pretty much wherever I go. I'm below average height as well, so I don't have an overabundance of strength. I think something commonly overlooked is what you carry the laptop in. I used to have an eastsport backpack and man did that thing get annoying if I put the y580 in it. Since then I've bought a swiss army backpack for $60. It's stiffer and the weight is much better distributed. It doesn't sag and the straps are padded and keep their shape, rather than dig into your shoulders. It made a world of difference for me.
To those who own a Y580: is it portable?
