I'm thinking of getting one of these myself. So a few queries, can the touchpad be disabled? I don't want it to be getting in my way when typing.

And any opnions about it? Like the "feel" of the keyboard compared to recent Thinkpads?

    Thanks.

Yes, the touchpad can be disabled through TPad Configuration, the suite of utilities for customizing to your use. Of course this is on my T41, a bit older. Probably has not changed since then. I find that the touchpad does not get in the way.

You can disable the touchpad in two ways, either by the operating system via the Synaptics Mouse Driver or by the BIOS and disabling it from there. I tend to disable mine from the BIOS as I prefer using the Trackpoint but you can switch it back on when you or your colleagues need to use it.

The feel is pretty subjective, I own a T61 with UltaNav and found it great to use. Though I also own an R61e with trackpoint alone and it feels just a good. Can't say much for the newer ones though (T400/T500) but I heard they're putting the old keyboards back in from public demand.

You might want to look for the SpaceSaver II keyboard. This also includes a TrackPoint, but not the touchpad, and has a very good feel. I actually have 3 of them (PS/2 for my Desktop, and USB for use with any device).

Here is a review of the SpaceSaver II.
