My first notebook computer believe it or not; I have not needed be too mobile in the past but my needs now dictate a do-it-all notebook. I will be doing general office tasks / browsing / some basic web development, a little bit of gaming (Civ IV, Medieval II, for now), and some light photoshop use.

    Here are the specs:
    Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz T7200
15" IPS screen (pretty excited about this)
    X1400
1 GB RAM (with an upgrade to 2 GB probably a year away)
100GB 5400 HDD (Will make it a secondary drive when Hybrid drives become available)
    DVD-R
    Thinkpad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi
    9 Cell

I decided not to bother with the fingerprint scanner.
    $1668
    *Gulp*

    You will enjoy it :D

The flex view screen should be awesome. If I didn't need the portability of the 14 inch, I would def. have gotten the IPS screen.

For me the ideal solution would have been a 14" widescreen IPS LCD, but hey, I needed the image quality more than the portability.

I just ordered it, the estimated shipping date is 12/16/06. Although I am really excited about it, I am not in that big of a hurry since I won't even be back in the country until Jan 10th or so. They would not ship to me abroad with the holiday special prices.

May have been better to get a quote for the holiday sale price, (quotes I believe are good for one month), and ordered it as late as possible due to you being away. This I mension b/c of their 21-day return policy.

I actually arranged for a friend to pick it up and fedex it to me where I am now so I can have it for the plane ride back and just because I am impatient :)

Their return policy is trash now anyway... Unopened, BAH!
I did not want to risk a price change or something like that.

What risk? Prices will be lower sometime later next month for thinkpads, as they always have every winter after the busy season, lol. It's not called the "january sales" for nothin'

A number of ppl have been able to return theirs for full refund, provided that they explained when ordering that they had been unable to see a thinkpad in their area. The policy is really designer to deter those buyers who habitually return products repeatedly.

Well, this configuration was only $1280 a couple of weeks ago with the EPP program and I missed out on that - it got changed with no warning.

Congratulations. I'm sure you will enjoy your notebook. Heck, it's a ThinkPad.
The trackpoint and keyboard alone will change your views on word processing on a notebook.

This will become "the standard" for you.

I am pretty excited about the pointing stick too, it might be more useful than the trackpad when youre stuck in coach in a flight and you have to have a 15" laptop wedged against your stomach :-D

I'll probably kick myself for saying this on the internet since that means it'll become some sort of hot commodity, but the exit row on an Airbus 321 is the solution to that coach class cramp.

I've flown a lot in the past (although I might be doing it less now) and I have gotten pretty good and getting those nice bulkhead seats and exit row seats, but you can't win every time :-D

Check out seatguru.com if you want to learn more about that

Interesting. Do the bulkhead seats have a/c power?

Not on the planes I am usually on, but then again I frequently get stuck on the older ones. I think the new Boeing 787 that is coming out soon might have power for all the seats but I am not sure. I got the 9-cell for traveling.

The Airbus 321 also has power at all seats, though not a standard AC port...so I dunno.

I was not telling people about seatguru on purpose. Now you gave it away (though, still, the exit row on a 321 is not your average exit row).

So one wants either the first row (if in coach) or the an exit seat? So a row of seats infront of an exit or behind (facing) an exit?

You like the first row? I hate it, no room for your feet.

You want the exit row itself (i.e. when you turn to side of the plane you want to see the door). Seating in the exit row does come with responsibility. In the event of an emergency you have to be able to assist the crew and you have to be able to lift 50lbs and keep your head in an emergency and be older than 15 (i.e. you have to be able to get the door open in the even of an emergency). You actually want anything but the row in front of the exit row (well...the row all the way in the back is worse but that's it).
