Ok since I just got a new X230 with what seems like a faulty trackpad I went to look for some help on Internet and WOW ... seems many people have problems. My small Samsung netbooks never had any issue in this regard and a Lenovo X230 which other than that seems a very fine machine has basically a non functioning trackpad? OK as I am not in the business of spending hours or days trying to figure this out ... has there been a solution to this in the last year that fixes it once and for all ? I don't think I can even work with that Touchpad. I can work with Trackpoint I guess when I get used to it again. A few years back I refused to buy Lenovo cause the X200/X201 etc models had overheating, CPU whine, loud fans and really bad screens... but good touchpads. Now I finally have a X203 with a great IPS (welll almost ... backlight bleeding ...) , a great keyboard, it's quiet, the fan does not come on very much, it runs cool enough ... all seemed perfect in paradise ... until I put my finger on the trackpad, tapped and nothing happened till the 3rd or 4th tap ... Shame ... Quick solution anyone ?

I don't like the touchpad on my x220 at all but it works for me. You can try to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad in the device manager. It seems that the majority of people here use the red track stick instead.

I don't think you can resolve poor hardware decisions. If you are a touchpad junky, sadly the only flawless experience lies in a Macbook. I have an 11" air for travel and it's so buttery smooth...but I prefer a trackpoint personally. Apple simply nails the trackpad fluidity to the wall and back. It's perfect.
As the above post suggests, most Thinkpad users just use the red trackpoint. I never ever touch my touchpad. No reason to. At all. -
Do you trackpoint guys not use 2-finger scroll? I find the trackpoint fine but I don't like going back and forth to do scrolling...
Also, just bought a new x230 and I hate the trackpad. The cursor moves four pixels at a time! -
Incidentally, I haven't been able to find the switch in the newest ultranav driver to enable smooth scrolling. Anyone else having that problem? -

ThinkLight and backlit keyboard?
Trackpoint and trackpad?
Can't they just make up their mind? That's not "design" in any respectable sense.
Me? I use a mouse -- Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000, black. -
The standard settings for the touchpad are horrible. After playing around in the driver settings I've got a decent touchpad that can actually be used.
Some of the changes I made include higher sensitivity, no tapping, two finger scroll, changing scroll zones etc. etc.
Everyone has their own preferences. -
There are some settings in the registry that are not in the utility. See: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadPS2
Be aware that opening the utility may reset registry tweaks. -
I did two things that made the touch pad useable.
1) downloaded this here: TwoFingerScroll v1.0.7 update! (two finger scrolling done right! + more)
WAY better experience w/the two-finger scrolling, which is one of the main reasons I use the track pad
2) I removed the palm rest and places some paper to 'shim' the click pad and stop it from clicking. On my X220, the click pad was fine; however, on my X230 there was some free play, about 2mm, so that every time I touched it the pad would flop up and down. This keep it from moving so it feels solid. It does end up disabling the bottom click buttons, but that's no big deal--I just use the track point buttons for left and right click.
I find the comments about "just use the track point" to be silly. I've been using the track point for >15 years, but there are still things that I can do easier and faster with a touch pad. To me the "best" option is to have both--and have them both actually function correctly. Doing the above seemed to work pretty well for me.
BTW, I upgraded to Windows 8, and at first the 2 finger scroll program was a little buggy. Then, mysteriously after a W8 update it began to work correctly. The two-finger scroll program has a good bit of customization and works worlds better than the Synaptics drivers. -
I use both too, scrolling requires less effort on the touchpad, when I need more precision I switch to the trackpoint. Good to see there are other people who do it similarly.
The two finger scroll works perfectly fine however, I don't see any need to change my drivers. -
