I purchased a pack of caps from amazon, labeled as PN 91P8421. The current trackcap set via lenovo is labeled as 73P2698.

I use the soft rim cap and the soft rim included with the purchased kit is at least a millimeter smaller in diameter and more concave (deeper dip). Someone told me that these might be for pre T4XX keyboards, as the lower key design and other changes allowed the trackpoint cap to be larger and rest higher above the keys. This is going on an external thinkpad usb keyboard so its not too important, but did I get an older set of trackpoints? Has anyone else come across 2 sizes of soft rim caps?

I don't know for sure, but that seems unlikely. I bought 10 soft rims when I had my R60 like five years ago. I'm using one of the them on my X220i as I didn't get a soft rim with the X220i. I haven't had any issues with it. My guess would be the ones you bought are knock-offs, which is why they are slightly different.

This is the link for the ones purchased. I guess knockoffs will have to do. I don't see how lenovo thinks these are worth 10 bucks a pack. They're erasers with holes.

Save yourself some money and buy them off eBay. I can get a pack of 10 for $5.00 but they're usually only one type.

I paid 11 dollars for 6 pack of OEM Lenovo Trackpoints. Normal price is like 20 bucks -.-
